Object: Gingrich calls for abolition of bilingual education, multilingual ballots
It is sane policy positions like these that make Newt Gingrich an
qualified candidate for higher office.
http://www.onenewsnow.com/2007/04/gingrich_calls_for_abolition_o.php
An advocate for English as the official language of the U.S. says he's
pleased that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is calling for an end
to bilingual education programs and multi-lingual ballots. However,
English First executive director Jim Boulet is calling attention to
the fact that Gingrich failed to take these positions while he was in
Congress.
More recently, Gingrich has compared bilingual education with "the
language of living in a ghetto." He also said the government should
stop mandating that various documents be printed in any one of 700
languages, depending on who randomly shows up to vote.
Boulet says Gingrich was different while in Congress. "His views on
English were ... 'let's chase the so-called Hispanic vote,' [and]
'let's make Spanish-only Puerto Rico a state,'" the English First
executive director says, noting that Gingrich even co-sponsored a bill
pushing Puerto Rican statehood.
"So, while we welcome the new Newt," Boulet notes, "we've not
forgotten the old. So we're hopeful." The English language advocate
says he believes Gingrich has lately taken his pro-English positions
because he wants to be president and recognizes that most voters do
not want bilingual education and multi-language ballots.
"There's the Newt in office, and there's the Newt out of office,"
Boulet observes. "The one out of office is very thoughtful, a real
original thinker, and pro-English." The other Newt Gingrich or
"Speaker Newt," Boulet suggests, seemed at that time more interested
in courting Hispanic voters than in pushing pro-English policies.

Although a handful of undocumented aliens in North Carolina voted

Typical Republican philosophy - let illegal aliens vote if they'll

that they'll vote Democratic.

An illegal alien is not a citizen. Federal law should require all
governmental agencies to report them to ICE whenever they are
identified. They should be deported without exception after being
fingerprinted. They should never be allowed to re-enter legally.

America hasn't had a conservative government for years. We have

Yep. He's still an *****.
"Bilingual education" is a good scare word. At least it's good at
scaring people who don't understand immigrant communities. I've know
lots of immigrants, but exactly NONE who do not want their children to
speak English fluently. The problem is, that it's difficult to figure
out how to best educate children who come here without English as
their first language. The idea that we want to use the big stick and
regardless of what's best for achieving the result teach in English
only is unbelievably short-sighted and stupid. But that's what the
Republicans do best.
Their transparent opposition to bilingual ballots can be explained by
the fact that they know that immigrant citizens and citizens whose
native language is not English do not vote for them as often as they
vote Democratic. It's just to disenfranchise a population that tends
to vote for their opposition.
Screw them. We should use bilingual education when necessary. We
should recognize the wishes of immigrant parents that their children
learn English and help them in whatever way is most effective. We
should continue to use bilingual and multilingual ballots wherever
there are large communities of non-English speaking citizens, and Newt
Gingrich should redirect his efforts toward a useful goal for him,
achieving autopederasty.

No, it's a move to disenfranchise a population that shouldn't be

what problem? students who can't speak or read? perhaps decades of

kids in china have no problem learning two, or three, or four
languages, nor do kids in other nations.

does that give you any ideas on what is wrong?

"Bilingual education" is a good scare word. At least it's good at
scaring people who don't understand immigrant communities. I've know
lots of immigrants, but exactly NONE who do not want their children to
speak English fluently. The problem is, that it's difficult to figure
out how to best educate children who come here without English as
their first language. The idea that we want to use the big stick and
regardless of what's best for achieving the result teach in English
only is unbelievably short-sighted and stupid. But that's what the
Republicans do best.

And yet after over 20 years of bilingual education, the problem is
significantly worse, not better. Doing the same thing over and over
again and expecting different results... I guess the Democrats are
short-sighted and insane.

The problem is not significantly worse. It's pretty much the same
problem, but when bilingual education is used advisedly it has been
successful. Obviously anything can be misused.

Their transparent opposition to bilingual ballots can be explained by
the fact that they know that immigrant citizens and citizens whose
native language is not English do not vote for them as often as they
vote Democratic. It's just to disenfranchise a population that tends
to vote for their opposition.

No, it's a move to disenfranchise a population that shouldn't be
enfranchised in the first place: illegal aliens who are voting in droves
contrary to law.

That's a fantasy.

Newt Gingrich should redirect his efforts toward a useful
goal for him, achieving autopederasty.

Wow. People who disagree with your politics are pedophiles now? Whatever
credibility you had just bottomed out at zero.

Not pedophile, "autopederasty" Google it. It's a polite--well,
perhaps not polite but cute--way to tell someone to go ***** himself.

In an otherwise normal political thread, one side
interrupts the festivities by presenting their imaginings
of sexual perversions on the part of the other. Strangely
enough, these imaginings always come from the same
side - the pattern is eerily consistent. Interesting.

Walt,
I could have understood this response if you were genuinely unaware of
the meaning of the obscure neologism "autopederasty," although your
unwarranted assumption that you appreciated the meaning of the word
would still place you among those seen masticating at restaurants or
renting movies in which thespians prominently appear. You, however,
were clearly aware that the recommendation that one "achieve
autopederasty" is not a comment on said person's past pecadillos but
rather a suggestion that said person "go ***** himself." I do not
imagine Newt Gingrich engaging in any sexual activity whatsoever.
Though I may be a pervert, I'm not THAT much of a pervert.
Putting aside the fantasy that any discourse found on Usenet could
conceivably qualify as "normal," your protestations that such sexually
charged insults come only from one side do not comport with my
experience. Rather, I believe that sexually charged insults from the
right were the order of the day during the Clinton administration.
Perhaps the reason that you perceive that the left maintains a current
monopoly on pornographic put-downs is that those on the right
encourage same by feigning such righteous high dudgeon that scoffers
such as the undersigned enjoy the aforementioned risible spectacle.
Thandarr
(Wow, this thesarus came in handy, even though it didn't have
"autopederasty" listed.)

On alt.politics and alt.atheism, that is my exact
experience - there's one or two extreme-right
lackwits who put forth the occaisional "*****"
comment, and a horde of leftists who literally
see nothing unusual about conflating in their
imaginations right-wing political leanings with
bestiality, pedophilia, masturbating to execution
films, and asking one's mommy to show you
how to use an anal vibrator. No Thandarr, I'm
not creating these examples from my imagination.
This is what your allies see as normal, according
to the norms of Usenet.

Rather, I believe that sexually charged insults from the
right were the order of the day during the Clinton administration.

That's not an experience I recall, though I wasn't
as active on these newsgroups a decade ago
as I am now.

No, I hold this perception because on alt.atheism
and alt.politics a standard tactic of the left nowadays
is to pop up with imagery of perverse sexual behavior
in an otherwise normal political thread, and direct these
imaginings in a libelous fashion at their political enemies.
Furthermore, they see this form of attack as laudable
behavior, even when they forget themselves and use
non-perverse sexual behavior (like homosexuality)
as their attempted calumny.
I don't know why I've developed such a sensitivity
lately to use of sexual imagery as a weapon. I think
part of it is the base hypocrisy of it, considering
the current most common source.
