Girls prefer pink, or at least a redder shade of blue
A study in the August 21st issue of Current Biology, a publication of
Cell Press, reports some of the first conclusive evidence in support of
the long-held notion that men and women differ when it comes to their
favorite colors. Indeed, the researchers found that women really do
prefer pink‹or at least a redder shade of blue‹than men do.
"Although we expected to find sex differences, we were surprised at how
robust they were, given the simplicity of our test," said Anya Hurlbert
of Newcastle University, UK. In the test, young adult men and women were
asked to select, as rapidly as possible, their preferred color from each
of a series of paired, colored rectangles.
The universal favorite color for all people appears to be blue, they
found. "On top of that, females have a preference for the red end of the
red-green axis, and this shifts their color preference slightly away
from blue towards red, which tends to make pinks and lilacs the most
preferred colors in comparison with others," she said.
Overall, the differences between men and women were clear enough that
the seasoned researchers can now usually predict the sex of a
participant based on their favorite-color profile.
To begin to address whether sex differences in color preference depend
more on biology or culture, the researchers tested a small group of
Chinese people amongst the other 171 British Caucasian study
participants. The results among the Chinese were similar, Hurlbert said,
strengthening the idea that the sex differences might be biological. The
explanation might go back to humans' hunter-gatherer days, when
women‹the primary gatherers--would have benefited from an ability to key
in on ripe, red fruits.
"Evolution may have driven females to prefer reddish colors--reddish
fruits, healthy, reddish faces," Hurlbert said. "Culture may exploit and
compound this natural female preference."
She said another way to separate "nature versus nurture" when it comes
to favorite colors will be to test the preferences of infants. The
researchers have plans to modify the color-choice test for use in young
babies and hope to have some answers on that front soon.
About the universal preference for blue, "I can only speculate," said
Hurlbert. "I would favor evolutionary arguments again here. Going back
to our Œsavannah¹ days, we would have a natural preference for a clear
blue sky, because it signaled good weather. Clear blue also signals a
good water source."
###
The researchers include Anya C. Hurlbert and Yazhu Ling of Newcastle
Univesity in Newcastle upon Tyne,UK.

preference.² Publishing in Current Biology, 21 August 2007, R623-625.

Yeah. That's why I question these findings a little. I wonder how much
is cultural. Little girls are 'supposed' to wear pink, so they get
dressed in pink and surrounded by pink. The same for little boys and
light blue. Parents, relatives, and the marketers reinforce this. How
many boy's jackets do you see in pink? Or better yet how many boys do
you see wearing pink? :-)

Yeah. I don't know about this study. My favorite color is green, so go

I absolutely loathe pink and always have. And, I
dislike orange nearly as much as a clothing color.
The only purple I like is the very dark purple on
velvet. My favorite color is bright red, followed
by some shades of blue. Olive is the only shade
of green I actually like (except on grass, flowers
and trees). My favorite color combination is red
and black. My personal opinion is that most
woman wear pink because they think that men
like it. Men wear pink shirts nowadays, too. (A
couple years ago, a truly nauseating shade of
yellow green became popular. Every time I'd
see someone wearing that shade, I'd actually
have to turn away. It literally made me sick to
my stomach. Thank goodness, that popularity
only lasted two years!)

By green, I mean dark green, sometimes called forest green. I also like
dark red, dark blue, grey, and black, but not necessarily in that order.
I really don't go for bright colors all that much.

My favorite color combination is red
and black. My personal opinion is that most

I wonder if it's that and also little girls were told that they were
supposed to like pink. That's why I'm taking the article i posted with a
few grains of salt. I think while things like preferences in music, art,
appearance, and even colors may have a genetic component, culture may
probably play the larger role.

Men wear pink shirts nowadays, too.

I recall that back in the fifties, pink dress shirts were "in" for guys
for a while too.

I think little girls are told they look "pretty in pink," so they wear
it. Or their mothers buy it for them, so they have no choice.
I've seen men in pink shirts, and not just the "business" button-
downs, either. Seriously, masculine-looking men in pink t-shirts.
Last one I saw was at a baseball game a few weeks ago. And I don't
think anyone was going to razz this guy; he was built like a tank.
My favorite color is black. Never really goes out of style, goes with

BTW, that song, "Pretty In Pink" is supposedly about a prostitute.

There may be something to this, you know.
(This is all from mempory, so excuse any inadvertant slips)
Most people are trichromats (3 colour vision).
A sizable minority of males (far more than females) are effectively
dichromats, or even monochromats. (Colour-blind)
And *some* females are tetrachromats (4 colour vision receptors).
No-one knows what percentage. It started off assumed to be a rarity,
but lots and lots of cases are being discovered, now that some are
explicitly looking for it.
(Males cannot be tetrachromats because it requires two X chromosomes)
I had a girlfriend who was 'into' interior decorating, and we got into
huge rows over paint colours.
I would see two blue surfaces and not be able to see any difference in
the shades. She insisted that were a totally different colour!
Then I read about tetrachromacy in a science paper, and she had her
vision tested, and sure 'nuff, she is a tetrachromat!
And can see thousands of subtle shades that are invisible to me.
(If it is common enough, it could well explain why females seem to be
far more colour conscious than males.)
So, the moral is: male and female vision is vastly different at the
colour level, physiologically, as a result of 'missing' a Y
chromosome.
'Pretty in pink' may be the result of physiology.

:

Could be. I would still think that culture has something to do with it.

Have you thought that 'culture' (in this case westerners vs chinese),
has a CONSIDERABLE correlation to genetics, as well as culture?
After all, east asians have a distinct lack of the acetadehyde
dehydrogenase enzyme, as compared with europeans.

contest without having to sleep with the judges.

What ? are you trying out for American idol?

I haven't sunk that low!
No, the local shopping centre is having a 'best of breed' dog show.

Let's see. Dubya is traveling to Oz in a few weeks. Perhaps you could
enter him for the "Ugliest Dog" prize?

Is Condaleeza accompanying him?

Heh! Condi seems to be MIA. I haven't seen her picture in weeks. Not
that she did all that much when she was in the news.

If their are any sheep farmers around, they would take Georgy behind
the shed and put him out of his misery, poor old addled cripple that
he is.

The poor sheep would probably get sick from laughing so hard at him.

It's the kindest thing to do, you understand.

Yep and we'd give the farmer a medal.

Johac.. you have only got to look at shopping difference between the sexes
to see where their gatherer preference to ripe reds comes from...
Men sit around the camp fire arguing which is best animal to go hunt and the
ways of doing it. Tell a few tales of hunts past, get totally wasted and
then, in the morning, go out and kill it and drag it home.
(Modern shopping: Research, tall tales in the bar and then go out and buy
it. One shop, one hit..)
Women wake up, sort out the kids, get rid of men (hunting, fishing, in the
mens hut getting trashed, they don't care as long as they've gone) Then go
out on masse and look at every damn tree, shrub and plant in the forest
(using their carefully honed "ripe / red" preference) and in the end come
back to the first one they saw and pick that. Back to village, wine, moaning
about men till ten mins before men come back and it's a quick dash round the
hut leaving the rush mats outside to look as if they've had a "Really Hard
Day" doing a multitude of tasks...
(Modern shopping: As above...)

Many of the women I knew were picky shoppers. I'm the stereotypical
male. I make up my mind what I want, where I want to buy it, and then go
get it. If the store doesn't have it I go to the second store on my
list, etc. Now I do a lot of my shopping on line, since one doesn't have
to go to the store. "One animal, one hit, drag home. Ook!" :-)

LOL - Perhaps that's why I do the majority of my shopping on line. Just
bought some belly dance stuff this morning. Woohoo! ;)
(nothing exciting - just some workout dance pants, ballet slippers, etc.)
