Global Warming Just An Excuse To Raise Taxes |
Public 'wary of green tax motives'
Last updated at 02:10am on 3rd September 2007
Nearly two-thirds of the public believe ministers are using environmental
fears as an excuse to raise tax revenue, according to a poll.
And research suggests their cynicism is justified - with green taxes raking
in £10 billion more for the Treasury than it would cost to offset the
entire UK's carbon footprint.
The figures are contained in a dossier compiled by pressure group the
TaxPayers' Alliance (TPA).
The document is likely to provide grim reading for politicians of all
colours - including Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Tory leader David
Cameron - who are committed to making individuals pay for habits which
damage the environment...

This is the biggest piece of crap I have seen for weeks.
The "public" must be more duped and stupid than I thought, if this
poll is correct.

Up to a point this is true. It doesn't neccessarily mean that the
public are sceptical about the reality of environmental problems.
A while ago, Gordon Brown doubled taxes on airflights and announced it
as a change to benefit the environment. If that had been it's only
purpose, he would have made a matching reduction in some other area of
taxation which had no negative environmental issues: He didn't.
The increase in tax probably was intended to discourage air traffic
and as such was a legitimate environmental move but, at the same time,
he managed to increase treasury revenues without having to announce it
as a tax increase. Politicians will always find a way to take
advantage of matters of public concern but that doesn't mean that
there isn't a real issue.

An exuse to raise taxes?, no an excuse to run up the debt to let some
other generation raise taxes after the current robber barons have made
their billions.
