The choice is you either go out in the sun and get skin cancer, or stay
out of the sun and suffer vitamin D deficiency.
What a loving god he is. What an intelligent designer. What a
farcical myth.

If you read the OT you will see this god's behavior is so erratic and
unpredictable I would think he suffered from several serious emotional and
mental disorders. On top of that, he was a mass murderer and serial
killer........ the god had issues.
The best of all is he forbid fornication, drunkenness and incest but then
saw Lot and his daughter's as RIGHTEOUS and blessed these incestuous,
drunken fornicators with sons - the preferred sex in those ancient times.
Never mind he murdered their mother for looking over her shoulder!!!!

My, but choices for some seem terribly limited. You also have the
option of going out in the sun and avoid strong ultraviolet before about
10 in the morning and after 5 in the afternoon, thus avoiding skin
cancer and getting sufficient vitamin D.

Intelligent designer should have made a perfect world or---- human
beings who wouldn't know the difference, right? Leaving nothing for us
to figure out for ourselves would be ideal.

That's still not an intelligent design. It's a work-around. A god
ought to be able to do a lot better than that.

An intelligent designer would have made an intelligent design. There is
little of that in the human.
Here's a little trick that you should not try at home. Safeway used to and
may still give quite a lecture on it to new employees.
Place a medium weight box on the floor in front of you.
Reach out with, say, your right foot and push it to the left parallel to
your body.
Or use your left and push right.
Get it just right and you will fell a pain similar to what you feel if you
step off a curb you didn't know was there. The difference is that it is much
worse and unless you are very lucky, it will not go away - ever.
You *will* be permanently disabled.
That's why the lecture.

Well, according to my own research and my doctor and plastic surgeon, my
skin cancer has to do with a blistering facial sunburn I received at age 12
and didn't have anything to do with my diet before, during or after the
incident.
Don't recall eating any toxic sludge either, just lots of fruits, veggies,

Easy Kathryn...take a look...
Abstract
http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/98/13/7510
Epidemiological and animal-based investigations have indicated that the
development of skin cancer is in part associated with poor dietary
practices. Lipid content and subsequently the derived fatty acid
composition of the diet are believed to play a major role in the
development of tumorigenesis. Omega 3 (3) fatty acids, including
docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), can
effectively reduce the risk of skin cancer whereas omega 6 (6) fatty
acids such as arachidonic acid (AA) reportedly promote risk. To
investigate the effects of fatty acids on tumorigenesis, we performed
experiments to examine the effects of the 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA and
of the 6 fatty acid AA on phorbol 12-tetradecanoate 13-acetate
(TPA)-induced or epidermal growth factor (EGF)-induced transcription
activator protein 1 (AP-1) transactivation and on the subsequent
cellular transformation in a mouse epidermal JB6 cell model. DHA
treatment resulted in marked inhibition of TPA- and EGF-induced cell
transformation by inhibiting AP-1 transactivation. EPA treatment also
inhibited TPA-induced AP-1 transactivation and cell transformation but
had no effect on EGF-induced transformation. AA treatment had no effect
on either TPA- or EGF-induced AP-1 transactivation or transformation,
but did abrogate the inhibitory effects of DHA on TPA- or EGF-induced
AP-1 transactivation and cell transformation in a dose-dependent
manner. The results of this study demonstrate that the inhibitory
effects of 3 fatty acids on tumorigenesis are more significant for DHA
than for EPA and are related to an inhibition of AP-1. Similarly,
because AA abrogates the beneficial effects of DHA, the dietary ratio
of 6 to 3 fatty acids may be a significant factor in mediating tumor
development.

She's not so far off base. The potential for skin cancer, like all
cancers, is dependent on two things: genetics and exposure to a
carcinogen (in this case, ultraviolet light). A good diet can protect
you, but you will likely get cancer if you have "bad" genes - if your
family, for example, has a history of it.
On the other hand, as you indicate, you can eat a relatively poor diet
and get away with it if you have no genetic predisposition to cancer
and you avoid carcinogens (good luck with the latter in this world!).
The point of this thread is not to argue about diet and cancer but to
present the dichotomy of trying to argue for an intelligent designer
when we see such obvious examples of poor design (we need sunlight to
manufacture vitamin D, yet exposure to that very sunlight can cause
cancer).
Obviously I didn't do a brilliant job of making the case...Ahem! (Exit

You did a great job, I understood your point easily but does that mean if
someone takes a steaming dump on the Mona Lisa that DaVinci was a bad
painter? Most of those who ascribe to the intelligent design philosophy are
biblical theists who believe in a world tainted by sin and therefore
corrupted by us, not by the original designer/maker. I can appreciate things
from your perspective but if you look at it from our perspective the irony
is awesome: you sin and mock God with your post on skin cancer, and it is
ultimately that sin (and all others) which is responsible for the corruption
of the earth in the first place.

Skin cancer from overexposure to ultraviolet light has nothing to do
with diet. It has to do with genetics and...overexposure to
ultraviolet light. People who stay out of the sun are unlikely to get
skin cancer (unless they have appallingly unlucky genes) even if they
do follow a diet of junk food.
Vitamin D has nothing to do with skin cancer, although it does seem to
offer some protection from colon and prostate cancers. Lack of vitamin
D will make you susceptible to rickets and multiple sclerosis. That's
why we put it into margarine and milk, although you can get it from
fish liver oil (yuk) and egg yolk (which of course exposes you to
cholesterol).
Didn't the intelligent designer just have a ball with vitamin D?
Obviously he hates black folks, too, because they can't manufacture it
as well as white folks in northern climes. Drinking a glass of milk
will supply you with about 400IUs of Vit. D, whereas going out in the
sun for a while can generate 20,000IUs. But then you get skin
cancer....
The point is that we need exposure to sunshine to generate vitamin D
because the intelligent designer was too dumb to enable the body to
make it without such exposure. So the very thing that is required of
us: exposure to sunlight so we can manufacture vitamin D, is also
harmful to us, because it can cause skin cancer. The two aren't
connected but they do undermine the argument from design
Now who is naive here? (note spelling).

Australian studies have shown,

But they only apply if you live your life upside down....

repeatedly, that a wholesome fruit, veg,
grain and some fish diet significantly reduces the likelihood of skin
cancer among those who spend time in the sun...Intelligent Designer
indeed!

Note the key phrase "among those who spend time in the sun". A
wholesome diet is precisely what our evolutionary ancestors ate
(assuming they had access to a reasonably varied diet). This is why it
is good for us - it's what our species grew up on.
