Object: God is as popular as ever
I just came across this item:
"At St. Louis Cathedral in the heart of the French Quarter, Archbishop
Alfred C. Hughes offered Mass for the first time since the storm hit more
than a month ago. The overflowing crowd included hundreds of local
worshipers as well as police officers, members of the National Guard and
dozens of other rescue workers."
Some people never get it. God "sends" 2 hurricanes and his ratings go up.

Of course, they have to praise god for killing those other evil sinners.

"religion is a socio-political system for controlling people's thoughts,
lives and actions based on ancient myths and superstitions, perpetrated
through generations of subtle yet pervasive brainwashing."

I will never understand it. If 500 babies had somehow drowned as a result
of the hurricanes - after days of praying for the hurricanes to dissipate -
the
'faithful' would end up going to mass en masse and thank the 'Lord' that not
even more were killed. If that isn't proof that these people are either
severely
brainwashed or mentally impaired in some way, I don't know. You would
think that they'd be cursing their imaginary God rather than praising him.

Like Graham said, these people have two options:
1) Believe in God and Believe that someone is watching over you and no
matter what happens, things will be alright.
2) Doubt God, try and fix things yourself knowing that life will be
hard
Most people would go with option 1, it's human nature to submit to a
higher power. And when there is no higher power to make things better,
human mind invents one (matter of argument) and in effect lies to
itself to make itself feel better. Our nature is pitiful.

Probably the same jerks who make Jerry Springer rich.
Same syndrome.

Because it gives you some measure of control.
If God sent the hurricanes, he must have some reason
to be punishing you. So really the actions of the
hurricanes depend on *your* actions - all you need
to do is suck up to god sufficiently, to act and
to think in precisely the way that you are told to,
and he won't send another one.
Science, on the other hand, says that hurricanes are
an inevitable result of natural forces. So they'll
keep coming for ever and ever, and the only choices
you have are to grin and bear it or get the hell out
of the way.
One view puts you in control, the other makes you
powerless. Hardly surprising that many people jump
for the first option.

Hmm. . . But science allows us to predict when and where hurricanes will
hit, so we can can out of town. Perhaps not full control, but better
than nothing.

And "God didn't kill me with the hurricane, so that means I must be special.
I am God's right-hand man. I am God. Bow to me or I'll send a hurricane to
get YOU."

Science, on the other hand, says that hurricanes are

Science also says that humans have a hand in the increased number of
hurricanes (global warming) and the same right-wingers ignore it.

True. But that link is rather feeble and distant
compared to the god one - no scientist says that
if you change the way you live your life there
won't be a hurricane *tomorrow*.
