'God is Not Great' by Christopher Hitchens arrives May 1st!

From Booklist
"*Starred Review* God is getting bad press lately. Sam Harris' The End
of Faith(2005) and Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion (2006) have
questioned the existence of any spiritual being and met with enormous
success. Now, noted, often acerbic journalist Hitchens enters the
fray. As his subtitle indicates, his premise is simple. Not only does
religion poison everything, which he argues by explaining several ways
in which religion is immoral, but the world would be better off
without religion. Replace religious faith with inquiry,
open-mindedness, and the pursuit of ideas, he exhorts. Closely reading
major religious texts, Hitchens points to numerous examples of
atrocities and mayhem in them. Religious faith, he asserts, is both
result and cause of dangerous sexual repression. What's more, it is
grounded in nothing more than wish fulfillment. Hence, he believes
that religion is man-made, and an ethical life can be lived without
its stamp of approval. With such chapter titles as "Religion Kills"
and "Is Religion Child Abuse?" Hitchens intends to provoke, but he is
not mean-spirited and humorless. Indeed, he is effortlessly witty and
entertaining as well as utterly rational. Believers will be disturbed
and may even charge him with blasphemy (he questions not only the
virgin birth but the very existence of Jesus), and he may not change
many minds, but he offers the open-minded plenty to think about. June

I already bought it, and read it (Amazon must be delivering it ahead
of the release date). It's pretty good, but it's really more banter
and invective (however deserved) than reasoned argument and proof. On
science, The God Delusion and God: The Failed Hypothesis are better.
On what's wrong with scripture, Sam Harris is more detailed. Of
course, Hitchens is a gifted writer and is a lot of fun to read. He's
more of a political commentator than Dawkins or Shermer or Stenger or
even Harris.
His attacks are somewhat sharper and are likely to be more offensive
than those of Dawkins, for example. Even though the renowned Ted
Haggard the "cured" homosexual dopehead called Dawkins "arrogant," the
fact is that he is frequently unjustifiably civil and polite.
Hitchens didn't go out of his way to do that.
I somewhat disagree with one thing in this review. I didn't take
Hitchens to be denying the existence of a historical Jesus of
Nazareth, just all the stories about him. In fact, if I remember
right there's a place where he says some of the unexplainable stories
are probably there because there was a real Jesus of Nazareth who was
involved in some incidents that his apologists later had to explain
away.
It's a good book. Freethinkers will enjoy it. It will outrage
traditionalist theists. It is less likely than some of the other
books I've mentioned to convince fence-sitters. Still, it's worth the
money and I recommend it.
