Gods and Generals - the movie |
Holy buckets!
I just ejected the movie after having watched almost three hours of it
(it's running time is 218 minutes). Couldn't take the religious
content of it any longer.
I rented it in hopes of watching a reasonably accurate (albeit
Hollywood version) account of the Civil War. What I saw, however, was
a film that couldn't have been written/directed better by Pastor Dave
himself.
A few minutes of CW tactics/footage, interspersed with endless
religious rhetoric. Phew! Of the 218 minutes of movie, I suspect
that over 200 of those minutes were spent tickling fundies (via
constant scripture quotes/power of prayer rhetoric, etc).
To anyone who has been thinking of viewing this film, I would strongly
advise against it. It is complete Hollywood/mainstream
religious-based crap.
I realize that, arguably, the religious aspect may have been
introduced into the film in an attempt to make it an accurate film.
However, the religious aspects of this film are too prevalent to be
real - at any point in history.
I felt as though I was watching a 'made for TV movie' on cable, but
instead of TV commercials every five minutes, I was bombarded with
religious messages throughout the movie instead.
Do not rent this one, folks.

JJ

As far as books go, the three volume series by Shelby Foote is THE work

Slightly OT. If you liked "Band of Brothers" see if you can find a copy of
the early 80's Australian mini-series "ANZACS". It's a similar type of
story following a group of Australian soldiers (including a pre-Crocodile
Dundee Paul Hogan) through WW1, from Gallipoli through to the end of the
war. It's a wonderful show and well worth seeing. It was released here
last year on DVD...not sure about any where else.

Well, in the interests of fairness, Stonewall *was* a pretty religious
guy...frighteningly so, sometimes. It wouldn't be a very accurate
portrayal if they didn't cover it. Yeah, they went overboard, but not
by as much as you may imagine.
That being said, the movie irritated the crap out of me because of its
deification of Jackson. IIRC, the movie pretty much portrayed him as
a frickin' saint, which he was not.

I thought about that when I read the DVD sleeve in the store, but I
figured that the 'GODS' part may have just been a metaphor in that
generals are the only 'gods' on the battlefield (as perceived by the
troops). The plurality of the word GODS further reinforced this
thought. Apparently, however, I was wrong.
Good eye, though. I wish that I'd have had your frame of mind at the

that over 200 of those minutes were spent tickling fundies (via
constant scripture quotes/power of prayer rhetoric, etc).

I walked out after about 20 minutes. I was bored to death.

Holy buckets!
I just ejected the movie after having watched almost three hours of it
(it's running time is 218 minutes). Couldn't take the religious content
of it any longer.
Thanks for the warning. It *was* on my list to rent someday.
