Twenty two thousand dead humans in Sri Lanka, but no dead animals. From
Reuters, reposted in full from
http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=oddlyEnoughNews&storyID=7200231
COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lankan wildlife officials are stunned -- the
worst tsunami in memory has killed around 22,000 people along the Indian
Ocean island's coast, but they can't find any dead animals.
Giant waves washed floodwaters up to 2 miles inland at Yala National
Park in the ravaged southeast, Sri Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve and
home to hundreds of wild elephants and several leopards.
"The strange thing is we haven't recorded any dead animals," H.D.
Ratnayake, deputy director of the national Wildlife Department, told
Reuters on Wednesday.
"No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit," he added. "I
think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know
when things are happening."
At least 40 tourists, including nine Japanese, were drowned.
The tsunami was triggered by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean on
Sunday, which sent waves up to 15 feet high crashing onto Sri Lanka's
southern, eastern and northern seaboard, flooding whole towns and
villages, destroying hotels and causing widespread destruction.

easily explained.. animals have larger eardrums capable of picking up on the
infrasonic waves produced from earthquakes and tsunamis.. and its very
likely said animals didnt run away in fear, but in pain, as the sheer
amplitude of said infrasonic waves was like listening to a jackhammer from a
distance of three centimeters.

Some animals hear sound on different frequencies; most
humans can't hear 100Hz, while elephants can hear at 50.
In all likelihood it's because the animals heard or felt
the quake, not some supernatural mumbo jumbo reason.
People talk about deer getting caught in the headlights,
yet on every TV newscast I saw, the soon-to-be-victims were
standing there fascinated instead of running. I am *not*
saying they were stupid, I am saying they were not aware
or were ignorant of the danger.
When I was in Patong Town, Phuket (the worst hit place in
Thailand) there were waves of two metres in the ocean. All
day long I could see similar effects to what was reported
in Phuket, that the water receded from the shore just before
a huge wave came in. I bet the effects were no surprise to
anyone who knows about the tsunamis of Japan in 1960 and of
Alaska in 1964.
The latest and worst news I heard today: a group of Thai
scientists were discussing earthquakes the day of the
quake and detected this one during their conference. They
chose not to issue a warning on the grounds that it might
hurt the tourist industry. As the saying goes, "Got any
more bright ideas?"

'Unfortunately, we have no equipment here that
can warn about tsunamis,' said Mr Budi Waluyo,
an official with Indonesia's Meteorology and
Geophysics Agency.
What, they have no radio or TV stations, and no telephones?
I am appalled; there was at least 40 minutes before the
water hit Phuket. With at least some effort by the idiots
in Thailand, the only country that could not have reduced
the number of casualties was Indonesia. There was adequate
time to warn all potential targets of the wave.

Cry Wolf, To

My point is really made to the many theists and apologists who lurk on these
boards. Using the language of their dogma, God kill tens of thousands of human
beings, but the animals were spared. Personally, I am interested in hearing what
those lurking theists and apologists have to say on the matter.

Perhaps human beings have taken over the coastal region of Sri Lanka to such an
extent that animals have been forced inland. And any remaining ones probably
sensed what was about to happen and ran for higher ground. Our earliest ancestors
would have sensed the same and ran for cover, but we have come to rely so heavily on
our rational processes that we have let our intuitive nature to wither and
atrophy. BTW, the knowledge of God is itself basically intuitive and experiental.
Insurance policies refer to any natural disaster as an "act of God," but we know
better than that--they are strictly acts of the natural world. Any dogma which
implies that God kills tens of thousands is barbarian. That he allows such events
to occur is altogether another matter.

Interestingly, it was widely reported that shortly before the tsunami
arrived in a number of places, the tide receded, leaving lots of fish
stranded on the beaches -- which had the unfortunate effect of drawing
many people to the beaches to gather up the fish for easy meals.
It might even tempt one to conclude that, while most of the animals
appear to have "gotten the message" in advance and avoided the
catastrophe, fish are on God's ***** list -- along with lazy poor people
who are greedy and/or naive enough to think there could ever be
anything like a "free lunch" in their otherwise extraordinarily
difficult lives. But that would be unfair. ;)

He doesn't exist....how much more proof do ya' all need ?
If you will pardon the expression, you are preaching to the choir :-)
My point is really made to the many theists and apologists who lurk on these
boards. Using the language of their dogma, God kill tens of thousands of human
beings, but the animals were spared. Personally, I am interested in hearing what
those lurking theists and apologists have to say on the matter.
And you think we would say that God killed them?
Who other than God would have the power to cause (or prevent) a massive sub-oceanic
earthquake and the resulting ripples that caused the tsunamis? Either God caused the
tidal waves that killed 70,000 people (and counting), or God did nothing to prevent it
from happening. Which was it?
Is that what you are
interested in or is it the allegation that "no" dead animals have been
found that interests you?
People died. Animals did not. Why?
