Injured Guardsman Fit For Combat, Not For U.S. Postal Service Job

(March 22, 2006)-Army National Guard Sgt. Jason Lyon is fit enough
for combat, but not for delivering letters.

The U.S. Postal Service has declared the western New York National
Guardsman suffers from a "physical impairment" that rules out a job
as a mail carrier.

A roadside bomb in Iraq that killed three of his friends left
Lyon wounded.

He later sprained an ankle.

It was that relatively minor injury that Postal Service doctors
say make him unfit.

Lyon has a stack of Army medical reports that declare him fit
for combat.

He says it seems unfair that he can carry a rifle, but not a mailbag.

Postal officials say Lyon is welcome to apply for a job as a
clerk or custodian.
