Golden Compass (caution, plotline revealed) |
Ahem. I can't hold this in any longer.
In The Golden Compass God is killed by a girl named Lyra.
Twenty four years ago, I named my daughter Lyra (after the
constellation; my wife and I were stargazing while she was about 6
months pregnant).
Unfortunately, I think her father tries to kill God, but obviously
must fail (I haven't read the book, my S/O is halfway through, but I
can't see how that would end well for the father).
Lyra even looked like the girl I saw in the movie trailer when she was
younger. And of course, she's a chip off this atheist's block (her
mother is a New-Age Nazi). We were laughing our asses off last night
about this, now she wants to be the one to push religion off the
cliff.
Neither of us have read the book, I'd never heard of it until this
movie came out.
All these signs, and I'm still an atheist. It's almost as if a higher
power is testing my resolve.

Damn. Oh well, don't trust what you read on the internet.
Did you read the books? My girlfriend is loving them, but I have a
hard time reading fiction anymore. Well, besides the Bible.

I set about reading all the "classics" when I was younger, after which
I got on a non-fiction kick, and I've just found it difficult to get
back into fiction ever since, as much as I love it. I guess I get that
quick fiction hit from watching movies these days. Or from listening
to theists.

For a long time, my wife was having trouble talking herself into
reading for pleasure.....she seems to be getting over it now. Heh. I
think what did it was The Last Mimzy Stories. She's been reading
Pratchett, too.
It's worth the effort...so make an effort!

I like end-of-the-world stories. There are a few classics - "When Worlds
Collide", or "On the Beach". Stephen King's "The Stand" is a great yarn
if you don't mind delving into the supernatural, as is Robert McCammon's
"Swan Song". Hey, as long as you can tell the difference between fact
and fiction, go for it. One of King's best is "It". If you've seen the
miniseries, forget it. But diving right in, the book is sensational.

I recently re-read "The Stand" after spending a Saturday sick as a dog with
a terrible cold watching the mini-series in its entirety on the SciFi
channel. Still enjoyable ;)

I used to be partial to Stephen King and Dean Koontz, but lately it's a
crap shoot to find anything good by either one. I guess you have to
downshift a little when reading fiction. It's OK, rationality comes back.

I stopped reading Koontz years ago as his stories all seemed to have
basically the same plotline. Man, woman, maybe a dog, bad guy, set in
California, etc., etc.

Same here, but you also have to add that the bad guy doesn't die a bad
enough death. I like to see them suffer at the end. If you've
terrorized a hotty and her dog for 450 pages, you've got to spend 50
pages dealing with the reality of bloody stumps for arms and hamburger
for gonads before getting that meat cleaver between your eyes.

I'm wondering where anyone with a rational mind can dig "pushing atheism"
out of a theme where someone "kills god". Then again, rabid theists are
far from rational.

The book is not exactly atheistic, but it is anti organised religion.
It is also clearly fantasy, and the "god" isn't really a god, it's
just an old angel who cons the other angels.

As I suspected, but we must remember, theists have great difficulty
