It's up North, where the population density is pretty low (not that will help
the poor buggers that go through it). It's not like NO, or Florida.

The trouble is that all the bananas in Australia are
1) no longer bent, and 2) not on the trees anymore.
and the suger cane crop is also wiped out, which
might even put up the price of rum.

It's OK, though because we have an entire state of people who can bend the
bananas.

Good thing I drink beer then.

It made me quite sad when the Beenleigh distillery stopped making the
best rum in the universe...

I visited Cuba a couple of years ago (before president Bush decided
that such visits might corrupt our morals) and tried several of the
local Cuban rums. The cheap stuff was about US$2 or $3 per bottle.
The best 'anejo' (aged) was seven years old and cost US$7 per bottle.
The best aged rum should be sipped in a snifter like a good brandy.
Never tried the Beenleigh in Oz.

In the early 70's I did a couple of marine science courses
on St. Croix, a US Virgin Island. Twelve "fifths" of the local
"Old St. Croix" white rum (a case of rum) cost just $8. Total.
(The USVI are tax free.)
That was $0.67 a bottle (a fifth of a gallon each).
Coke cost more than that - needless to say we used to mix
some rather strong drinks. (Small wonder I'm not a career
marine biologist.)

My family has spent a lot of holiday time (and for a while
I lived and worked) on Culebra Island, just east of Puerto
Rico, and some of the rums there have become traditions
for us - Ron del Barrilito two and three star rums especially.

http://www.polishedpalate.com/press/ronbarrilito.html
I also quite like the Mount Gay Eclipse Barbados rum,
but ours has been a Bundaberg rum household here
in Sydney for a while now.

Nothing at all like Katrina, the reports here in Sydney are saying.
http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/one-in-three-roofs-gone/2006/03/20/1142703252564.html
A few people hurt... possibly a couple missing and a whole lot
of roofs taken off houses.
There are a lot of people still at risk in make-shift housing
out in the bush (they do that up there a lot), but again it is
not like New Orleans.
John - up in Brisbane but still a long way south of the storm -
will have to take great care if he goes surfing. (Very big waves!)
(Brisbane should have fine weather today, sayeth the SMH.)

It's just about as far to where the cyclone will be a problem as it is from
Brisbane to Melbourne. A *long* way away. I do feel sorry for the marine
biologists - they're going to lose a lot of data and setups.

Who are you going to believe? Me, or your own eyes?

I should have known:
Wendy and I are headed that way in a few days.
We also had plans to go to Phuket in Thailand a week after the tidal
wave.
We had plans to go to London around the time of the bombings.
Went to Mexico instead of London, and left just before a cyclone; we
went back home to Houston in time for Katrina and Rita.
Now this...
Oh, and for good measure:
http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/second-cyclone-not-yet-a-threat/2006/03/20/1142703251287.html
I feel like "The Cooler". Think tourist towns will pay for me to stay
away?
(Wendy called the hotel in Port Douglas, and they say the storm hit
south of them. Tours to the GBR are still on, no real damage to report.
Too early to tell about the next one.)

"tsunami". It had nothing to do with tides.
Sorry, but this an uncontrolable reflex on my part.

I doubt you'll find your holiday much affected. But you might like to offer
your services to competitors of holiday resorts - if they'll pay you to go to
their competitors' hotels, you can cause a major disaster there and have a
nice time anyway.
BTW: I gather hotel prices are very cheap in Baghdad these days...
