At least the kulaks like yourself didn't last long enough in Stalin's Russia

I dare you to tell a school board that in Georgia or Alabama.

Schools are actually controlled by administrators. These are generally
people who were found to be unsuited either to be teachers, or for
middle management positions at operations such as JC Penney or Best Buy.
Thus they were forced to go peddle their "services" somewhere where it's
harder to get fired. Yeah, sure, it's nearly impossible to fire a
teacher, but that's only if they can last longer than a year before
someone notices they suck. The first year is usually a probationary
period in which employment is "at-will", at least on the school
district's part. Unfortunately, who's entrusted with noticing that a
teacher sucks? Those administrator fellows mentioned above. In
individual school districts, the unions haven't a disproportionate share
of power. It's when the statewide or national organization buys people
in the legislature or executive branch with big campaign contributions
that the trouble starts. Nothing special about this. Everyone from the
Sierra Club to Dow Chemical is playing the game. At least in California,
the prison guard's union, not a terribly liberal organization when you
think about it, has been among the the most successful of all. One
disagreement with the educational system that I see conservatives
expressing is that it sometimes puts forward awkward truths which are
unkind to their agenda. It's not very much like Fox News that way. Yeah,
discipline is often soft, or inconsistent or wildly irrational. Silly
concepts like building "self-esteem" become fads. Or "whole language"
teaching of reading, which will work, but probably only for the
brightest 10% of the kids. Spelling seems to have been deemphasized as
horribly old-fashioned, boring, and likely to make the functionally
illiterate feel inferior, I suppose. There are problems. OTH, I'd much
rather the kids got accurate biology textbooks, sane, reasonable and
justifiable interpretations of the US Constitution in civics, and had
some idea how pregnancy might occur, things that are likely to be left
out of an ultra-religious, ultra-right home-school education.

You were OK until the "ultra" part. I know many who home school and
religion has nothing to do with it. The intelligence of the parents
teaching the kids is paramount, and that might accurately reflect your right
wing label. Are right wing parents that CAN home school smarter than the
left-wing "leave it to the government to raise my kids" parents? The
government schools suck. Teen pregnancy among home schooled students is
insignificant compared to the those that attend government left-wing
indoctrination centers.
Otherwise, we agree.

Factory output is up, but we have known all along
that productivity is way up, and real wages are
down, and worker benefits are down. The only
things that are up is how hard each worker must
work.
But where are the jobs?
There are over one million fewer jobs in America
today than when Bush took office. Nearly two
million jobs need to be created each year just to
keep up with the increase in the labor pool.
And of the one and a half million jobs bush is
saying that have been created this last year,
the average wage is down $9 per hour.
Are you republicans sure you want to make
the economy an issue in the next election?
It's fine by me if you do.
As Bush would say...
"Bring it on!"

Ronald Reagan had this great trick of always having some great news to
report. For instance he'd open a press conference by saying "We're
winning the war on drugs--statistics this month show that heroin use
is down in the 27-32 year age bracket." Of course that was just one
favorable statistic picked from a whole table, and also it was just
for this month, next month it could be up again. But still people got
the idea that things were just getting better and better. If there
was bad news to report you'd hear it from a press secretary, never
from Reagan himself. That was St. Ronald's particular talent.
Both of the Bushes have tried this tactic but it never worked for
them. GW has squandered his credibility and people don't put as much
stock in what he says. As Al Franken put it, people give him the
benefit of the doubt, they figure he doesn't know what he's talking
about. In particular when it comes to the economy and their jobs, the
American people are feeling squeezed. A little rise in this month's
numbers doesn't thrill us like it used to.
