How hemispherist of you!

and spring is on its way.

Riiiight. Any day now the robins will be chirping and flowers
blooming...after yet another few months of increasingly miserable and
unbearably cold winter. Solstice is a scientific fact, but it's celebration
is pure social construct. The fact that the days are getting longer means
squat when it's 20 below zero and the wind chill is down to 50 below.

Rejoice and celebrate! Soon there
will be a new year.

Again, that's rather presumptuous of you and insensitive to Jews, Muslims,
Chinese, and probably others I can't remember.

What better reason for the season?

Uhhhh, Festivus Maximus!!! Of course, USENET is pretty much a continual
celebration of the ritual Airing of Grievances.

Well, you go to your church and I'll go to mine. ;-)

Church, what church?

Well, I assumed you were proclaiming your gospel, your Good News. And
Rejoice! is the proper response to good news, isn't it? A bit like the
gospel delivered to the shepherds, "I bring you good news of a great joy
which will come to all the people." Lk 2.10

Unless you mean the Carvery we are all going to on New

The Good Bible enjoins us to "Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with
those who weep." (Rom 12.15) And so: Have a great feast with lots of
rejoicing and we plan to do the same.

You did?
Well I am not responsible for your assumptions, I make enough
errors of my own.
And the connection with churches is?

And
Rejoice! is the proper response to good news, isn't it?

Absolutely :-)
Though I did not rejoice when the Belgrano was sunk as
ordered by Margaret Thatcher (spit) my reaction was more one
of disgust. I would have rejoiced at hearing the news of the Victory
at Trafalger 200 years ago though.

A bit like the
gospel delivered to the shepherds, "I bring you good news of a great joy

The price of bread was coming down?
Hmm, that would indeed be good news :-)

Yep, my post - to a non-religious newsgroup - had nothing whatsover to
do with religion yet she had to rudely intervene to push it into our
faces on the most threadbare of excuses.
Isn't the promotion of religion banned on this newsgroup?

Christians had *better* be rejoycing and thanking 'Jesus' for it all.

Don't worry, I am not a Christian, I do not seek to impose it
on you, nor will I start throwing brickbats at you in the form
of lies and threats for not doing what I say. It was just a
suggestion, a way to forget winter for a few days.
Hope nobody gets flooded out. That will put an damper on
the new year for them.

Gopher wood! Gopher wood! Get yer gopher wood 'ere! Temporarily out of
stock for the last 3500 years, but limited supplies available now! Laugh
at your neighbours as they drown in the deluge when you float past in
your gopher wood ark! Pitch at 50% off too!

One equinox I was wandering some internet chat rooms,
and came upon a band of neo-pagans who had gathered
together online to celebrate the event. While I was there,
one worshipper said it was the best spring equinox ever.
Another one actually corrected him, saying no, it was the
fall equinox. A whole-room argument broke out over which
set of rituals they ought to be doing at the time. :-)
