Anyone else been keeping an eye on Google lately?
I used to use it almost exclusively, but then using it seemed to spawn
pop up ads everywhere, and I notice they added some "spam free or
popup free" interface or toolbar, which now seems to be gone when I
look at the main page again.
What happened?

I've been using Google almost exclusively for several years now, and have
never had a pop-up window from them.

You've got scumware on your computer.
Open command prompt
Type:
tasklist /svc > foobar.txt
Press return
Then send the contents of foobar.txt (or the file itself) to an appropriate
techie person and ask what is suspicious.
If you want to send it to me:

Get Mozilla. And, as Fred mentioned spyware, get "Spybot-search and

Popup ads appear often because you have some adware/spyware, or that you're
visiting a webpage plagued by popups. Get rid of spyware and adware by
running Ad-aware (there are others as well), and to get rid of the other
popups, use some popupkiller (have no experience of those) or use a browser
where you can block unrequested popups. I use Mozilla Firebird and it's
doing an excellent job. Aside from that, I haven't noticed any increase in
popups even when I use Internet Explorer and Google.

Not on Google.

I dunno what it was, but it's gone now. When I first started having
the problem, I thought "Oh man, Google has finally caved into the
advertising game."
I think it must've been some type of temporary spyware or adware
that got stuck into my browser somehow. I have my home page set
to Google, and when I clicked home one time, there was a new Google
screen, which had an ad for an ad-free Google interface/taskbar.
Whatever it was, it had me fooled into thinking Google had changed,
and that Google was providing a new interface to get rid of the popups
that were recently added BY THEM. "Very suspicious," I thought.

I have not noticed. But I use Proxomitron to cut out that sort of
rubbish. It makes the local host PC a customizable proxy through which
then filters pages as they download. It speeds up connections
considerably.

Those who suggest spyware/adware are probably right.
However, when I recently did an update to Windows XP (not a critical
one) it turned on Windows Messenger. I used a utility I have to turn
it right back off, so I don't know if that's what's happening to you.
But I'm told that it is an avenue for spam and other unwanted crap.
You can get this utility here:

It's quick and it works.

You're told incorrecty.
There *was* a buffer overflow vulnerability in an old version that means
that people can send you messages with it, but that must be about a year
old.
Windows Update fixes the vulnerability (and has done for about a year) and
so removes the workaround.
Some people rely on utilities that run using this service, and so disabling
it could cause unstability for some users, and generally do bad stuff (in
particular - to people running machines on networks where they need to be
sent information about server avaliability)

Just a suggestion - offered FWIW. Thanks for the clarification.
After the update mentioned above, my computer told me I suddenly
needed messenger for things I have been using all this time, and they
still work with it disabled.
IOW, didn't need it then, don't need it now, and I only run what I
need.
I know there are different messengers and I don't know the difference
between them since I don't use them. Those that do use them should
know the capabilities and vulnerabilities, though.
I once got a pop-up during a system backup because I shut down other
apps, including my firewall. Now I just everything as is and do the
backup and it works.
Maybe I pay too much attention to security, that's because I know what
the potential of interconnected computers is, but I keep my computer
working for me, the one who bought it, not for market research, not
for trojans, not for spammers or anyone else that I don't want to
support. And it never crashes. It runs with pep and energy, ardor and
zeal.
Keep the cybercondoms on and fresh.

Windows? Never crashes? wow...I'm impressed.
I recently put win2k on mine, and it is better than 98 that
I had on it before, after I figured out how to get it set up
right (including disabling Messenger after getting some pop
up spam through it). But it has crashed a couple times when
I was playing solitaire while Mozilla was loading a page.
Maybe a Mozilla bug? it's open source, constantly changing,
so that's likely. Still, it did crash....

Oh, I've had to restart once or twice. But not from the BSD. Well,
maybe once, because I got lax. I went thru a learning curve via
several machines before I attained near perfection. No system will
never crash, get used to that. Unix crashes, altho rarely, and usually
to a mis-application. (I work a lot with unix)
And, I don't know why, but games always seem to have a bad effect - on
all computers I've tried them in. Fortunately for me, I don't use my
computer for games: I want a physical machine with a physical ball
that you can tilt, a board to throw darts at, or a table that involves
a cue ball that responds physically to how it's hit and how well the
cue is chalked. I will not compete against nanoseconds. It's not a
sport. Not to me, anyway.
Cheers!

You just gotta keep the system clean. Uninstall what you are going to
replace, use a utility that checks the registry against the rest of
the file system, (Nortons Windoctor works for me). Uninstalling from
control panel just hides most apps. You have to search for and delete
the folder it was installed in, run Nortons, and verify it's still
gone. If not, you need to do the forbidden regedit, and delete every
key and/or entry that you *know applies to what you uninstalled. Then
run Nortons, again and again until it comes up clean. And search again
to verify that what you uninstalled is *really gone*. Sounds like a
lot but it's worth a little time now to prevent big wastes of time
later.
Naturally make a restore point first, and if you have a total backup
utility like Ghost or Drive image, do that first. And of course,
always do chkdisk (check drive for errors) *before you do anything to
the system anytime..
In short, before you uninstall and or install, run the utilities
before to make sure it's clean, run the utilities each step, and run
the utilities after to make sure it's clean when you are done.
And keep the cybercondoms updated and running at all times. You have
to ask me what works for me and I'll tell. I offered the info once for
free and got reported for spamming. So, you gotta ask.
