seems to have gotten really popular just over the past couple of days.
So much so that Google seems to have gotten overloaded; when I tried to
connect just now, I got a "server error" page from them.

Yes, that's a classic. What worries me though is that, for this joke
to get known by word-of-mouth, there had to have been at least a few
people at first who entered "Weapons of Mass Destruction" into Google,
then, with all with serious intent, clicked "I'm Feeling Lucky."
