In 1998, long before Jerry Springer: The Opera galvanised evangelical
Christians to vocal protest against blasphemy, independent Scottish
publisher Canongate had achieved the same result - not with a
coprophiliac Jesus or a torrent of musical obscenities, but with
nothing more offensive than a new edition of the King James Bible.
Canongate's crime, in the eyes of the religious demonstrators, was to
reclaim the books of the Bible from the literalists and to treat them
simply as works of great poetry, myth and philosophy. Worse still,
defying the orthodoxy that the Bible as we now know it represents an
organic and divinely inspired entity, Canongate had broken it into its
constituent books and prefaced each one with an introduction by writers
who came largely from outside the Christian tradition.
