Object: Gov. Apologizes for 'Tar Baby' Remark
I believe this is just one more instance of certain people getting
bent-out-of-shape about nothing. None of the colored people I know took
offense to Gov. Romney's comments.

BOSTON (AP) -- Gov. Mitt Romney has apologized for referring to the troubled
Big Dig construction project as a "tar baby" during a fundraiser with Iowa
Republicans, saying he didn't know anyone would be offended by the term some
consider a racial epithet.
In a speech Saturday, Romney, a Republican considering a run for president
in 2008, acknowledged he took a big political risk in taking control of the
project after a fatal tunnel ceiling collapse, but said inaction would have
been even worse.
"The best thing politically would be to stay as far away from that tar baby
as I can," he told a crowd of about 100 supporters in Ames, Iowa.
Black leaders were outraged at his use of the term, which dates to the 19th
century Uncle Remus stories, referring to a doll made of tar that traps
Br'er Rabbit. It has come to be known as a way of describing a sticky mess,
and has also been used as a derogatory term for a black person.
"Tar baby is a totally inappropriate phrase in the 21st century," said Larry
Jones, a black Republican and civil rights activist.

As a politician, Romney should have known better

Yeah and sometimes it seems there are so many off limits words nowadays
that it would be impossible for anyone to know what words he is allowed
to use. I wonder if an Irishman is allowed to dance a jig anymore?
And I have to suspect that some of this is a result of people who are
"professionally offended." They make being offended the center of
their lives. Of course not all the offended do that, but some appear
to. They can do more of it if they add to the list of "unacceptable"
words.
The real issue should be respect, not the words someone happens to use.
I've heard words considered racist used respectfully and the user was
clearly not being racist. I've heard other words considered acceptable
used in such a manner that the speaker is clearly being disrespectful.
I see nothing disrespectful in Romney's comment. He appeared to be
expressing his concern about the task he is undertaking with the
tunnels. That is a very valid concern.
To me the Uncle Remus stories seem particularly unsuited for the
accusation of racism since they were aimed at showing how the slaves
(represented by B'er Rabbit) were getting back at and defending
themselves from their masters (represented usually by B'er Fox). Yeah
the tar baby story does show a slave/Rabbit mistake but even then ol'
B'er Rabbit gets the best of B'er Fox.
I think my favorite Uncle Remus story was about B'er Rabbit's laughing
place. IIRC, B'er Fox was the victim. Seems the bunny let it get out
that he had a laughing place that he very much enjoyed. Well, after
lots of pursuasion, the fox finally gets him to agree to share the
location with him. B'er Rabbit gives him some rather complicated
directions of how far he must go in which directions, ending up with a
final leg on which he must be running. The instructions lead to a
hornets' nest which B'er Fox doesn't seee because he's tired and paying
attention to following the instructions exactly while running. He runs
into the nest. The hornets act as hornets are wont to act when someone
hits their nest. B'er Rabbit's comment, through his laughter, is to
the effect of, "I said it was *my* laughing place. I didn't say you
would laugh there."

Outgoing FCC Chairman Michael Powell and all four fellow commissioners
- two Republicans and two Democrats - strongly support harsher
penalties for indecency violations.
The FCC began stepping up enforcement of indecency rules even before
the Jackson incident, which fellow performer Justin Timberlake
famously blamed on a "wardrobe malfunction." But the Super Bowl
focused public attention like nothing before. Over half of the 1
million indecency complaints filed with the FCC last year were related
to the incident.

137.65 million people watched the Super Bowl but an orchestrated
campaign among religious zealots managed to pump through 500,000
complaints. That's .0036 of the audience, if, indeed, all of those
500,000 actually watched the game and there weren't people sending ten
an twenty e-mails apeace. Tits on TV aren't anything new, by the way.
The I-Claudius series on PBS had lots of bare breasts, and the
miniseries on Gaugin (NBC I believe) was repleat with topless Tahitian
women. Visit any good art museum. You'll find plenty of depictions of
breast-feeding Madonnas and a pleathora of bare-breasted goddesses.
Drive across memorial bridge in Washington and guess what you'll see
decorating the entrances. Funny how people in the Victorian era could
tolerate pictures of Brittania with a bare breast but our modern
Rightard religious freaks go into hysterics when a breast is flashed at
a ball game. You people should really grow up. You hate too much and
eat yourselves up about nothing. Idiot.
