What about the Viking evangelicals who came to Britain
to 'persuade' us with big axes to worship Odin after the fall of Rome?
How high would you rate that? The bastards raped my great
great great ... great grandmother.

Well he was on one of a flotilla of four ships. Legend has it his crew
were a really dishevelled lot, the ship was in poor condition
the torn and dirty sails hung limp and the swords were rusty.
The other ships were really smart and clean with polished
and sharp swords. The flotilla came ashore one day. The first
boat grounded on the sand and , the crew leapt out and formed a neat
line keen and ready for orders. Same with the second and
third boats. GG...GGrandads boat slowly grounded the shore and
the tired crew dragged themselves out to form a ragged line. His mate
turned to him and said, "Oh dear Odin, I hope it isn't rape and
pillage again mate"

Viking evangelists? It wasn't that kind of religion. Christianity and
Islam are the only ones I can think of that order its followers to go
out and convert people.
You left out the Anglo-Saxons who came after Rome withdrew. And who
didn't find many Christians. It wasn't long after Constantine made
Rome officially Christian, but the church had neither the power nor
the range it had later, and it took time to spread to the periphery of
the empire.
Missionaries from Rome arrived a couple of centuries later.

Just a bit of humour.

Though not widespread Christianity existed in Britain during
the later Roman period. St. Alban became the first Christian
martyr 208-209 before the time of Severus. The Roman began to
withdraw from Britain after 370 and were gone completely by 410.
You are correct the Saxons were the first to threaten and invade,
I got them mixed up with the Vikings who came in the 8th Century with
their famous axes and religions.

That seems a bit unfair.
The fall of the Roman empire wasn't THAT bad.

I'm on the chapter III of Gibbon's "Decline and Fall", I'll tell you
who wins at the end of the book :-)
