Great grandmother pregnant with twins |
59-Year-Old Set to Give Birth to Twins
Thu Nov 11,11:05 PM ET
By ELLIOTT MINOR, Associated Press Writer
SYLVESTER, Ga. - A 59-year-old great-grandmother is pregnant with twins and
will deliver next month, three decades after she had her tubes tied. "They
came untied," Frances Harris said Thursday.
The multiple birth Dec. 21 would break the purported record set this week by
a 56-year-old New York City mother of twins.
Harris, of rural Sylvester, Ga., said she wasn't trying to get pregnant -
and didn't realize she was - until she started gaining weight and went to
see her doctor.
"A lot of things changed about me," she said. "I started craving grapes and
apples, things I don't usually crave. By then I was four months pregnant."
When the doctor broke the news, "They had to sit me down. I couldn't even
talk," she said.
The news was even more shocking considering Harris - the mother of five,
grandmother of 14 and great-grandmother of six - had her tubes tied 33 years
ago after the birth of her youngest child.
Harris had her first child when she was 15; 44 years will separate her
first-born from the newborns. She was divorced years ago from the twins'
father, 60-year-old Raymond Harris, a heavy equipment operator. She said
they will remarry before the birth.
The oldest American believed to have given birth to twins is Aleta St.
James, a single mother who turns 57 on Friday. She gave birth Tuesday by
in-vitro fertilization at New York City's Mount Sinai Medical Center.
Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (news - web
sites) show 263 children were born to women between ages 50 and 54 in 2002.
The oldest American to give birth is Arceli Keh, of California, who was 63
when she had a daughter in 1996.
Harris said some family members, concerned about health complications, had
suggested she end the pregnancy.
"I couldn't live with myself," she said. "I pray we all three pull through.
When they're so little, they're so beautiful. I think they are God's gift."

Yikes!!

Hmmmm, maybe I WILL have more!!

Can't wait to tell my mother. She'll get a kick out of this. She probably
feels like a new mom now since she is such an active caretaker of Morgan.

Yikes indeed. One of my SILs just found out she was pregnant the day before
her 40th birthday. She's not the happiest of campers, but looks like it was
meant to be. Of course, my other SILs are scrambling to make sure they have
plenty of birth control handy. I had my tubes tied four years ago and this
has me going "uh oh" :)

Uh oh is right. I've been relying on the tied tubes option myself for many
years. I'm only a grandma, not yet a great grandma, but I couldn't imagine
being pregnant again at this point. It makes me hope I hit menopause before
Bush has a chance to nominate a Supreme Court justice.

In large families, that's not all that uncommon -- my father is 22 years
older than his yougest sister, so I have an aunt seven years older than me. I
married the youngest daughter whose other five siblings were spread over 16
years before her, so I have a sister-in-law who's three years younger than my
mother, and my late father-in-law (who died in 1991) was born two weeks before
my maternal grandfather -- and oldest SIL has a son, my nephew, who is nine
months younger than me.

He's right - people who have large families often have them over many
years. For example, my husband's grandmother was the youngest of
children, and her oldest sib was 25 years older than her. I do
genealogy as a hobby, and in past generations you see the pattern very
strongly dictated by reproductive biology and breastfeeding - they
popped kids out every 2 years or so, and so if they started when they
were 18, they were still having babies wat 38 when they were grandmas.
My mother's mother was the oldest of her mother's 10 children - and
thus, my mom grew up with aunts who were very close to her in age.
And on the other hand, my widowed grandfather remarried later in life
(funny thing how people rarely complain about MEN who choose to have
kids when they are older), and had a second family. My "uncle" Dave is
8 years younger than me.
No biggie. Just the stuff that happens while we're all making other
plans!

Don't forget to mention that where you come from,inter-marriage
amongst family members is quite common; brothers, sisters, cousins,
grandmothers,ect.., it's just one big "happy" family.

Great-grandmother at 59? It's possible to attain that status in a woman's
early 40s...and I've encountered a couple of grandmothers not yet out of their
20s in the part of eastern Kentucky I was born in.
