Greetings, my first post and a question to pose |
Hello everybody.
I am completely new here. This is the first time for me to post
anything to Google groups.
To start with:
In a recent discussion with a theist, I was told that one of the
pieces of evidence for a creator deity was the fact that the earth
contained life. The earth possessed characteristics that made it
perfect to sustain life. This was evidence that it had to have been
designed.
Now, I find many things wrong with this simplistic argument. There
are many lines of enquiry I could pursue to analyse this. However, I
will simply present only 1 of them here:
The theist in question also believed that his deity had created the
other planets to be found in our solar system. However, as far as we
know, they are devoid of life. Now, presumably, if the deity had
created and imbued our planet with characteristics to sustain life,
then this was his purpose.
But, if he had created the other planets as well, could we say that he
designed them NOT to sustain life?
If so, what was his purpose in doing so? Why bother creating a planet
without life?
Why would these planets have been given atmospheres, gravitational
fields, magnetic fields, rotational motion, and many other qualities
our earth shares with them if the deity had no wish for them to
sustain life? After all, it is these particular characteristics (with
their own particular variations) that sustain life.
In short: Would it make sense to say the creator created these planets
for the purpose not to have life? If so, why?
It does not make sense to me for a creator to create a planet for
sustaining life (presumably this is the purpose for the planet) and
then create other planets without them.
Anyone have any ideas on this issue?

This is akin to a puddle believing its hole was created just for it. Life
exists on this planet because the conditions are just right in this segment
of time. Life adapted to changes in conditions over time, it's an ongoing
process.

If the conditions were different any life would be different as well.
