Two inmates were killed by a gre-nade explosion
inside a prison, an inmates’ rights group said.
Venezuelan Prisons Observatory director Humberto
Prado said during his weekly prison death toll report
that 11 other violent deaths were recorded between
Nov. 7 and Nov. 13.
Those deaths and other in previous weeks are directly
linked to overcrowding and lack of guards at many
of the country’s jails, Prado said. Most of the deaths
were reported at the Penitenciaría General de Vene
Zuela located in Guárico state, where four inmates
perished in a gang fight.
The Interior and Justice Ministry’s Rapid Reaction
Force (ERIC) with the supervision of the State Prosecutor’s Office carried out a
search at the prison on Saturday, after the deaths took place, and found several
weapons, including 11 handguns and 84 rifles, as well as hundreds of rounds of
ammunition and five gun magazines.
In the blood bath last week 19 inmates were injured, including an Interior and
Justice Ministry official who was stabbed in the stomach at Rodeo II penitentiary in
Miranda state.
Most of the dead were victims of shooting, but one prisoner bled to death when his
throat was slashed.
The group said that two inmates escaped custody from Vargas hospital in Caracas while
receiving treatment.
Three escaped from the jail in Guanare, Portuguesa state and another sought freedom
from the prison in Falcón state.
This Friday will be the first an-niversary of declaring a state of emergency in the
country’s jails by the Venezuelan Prisons Observatory, Prado said.
Little has changed behind prison walls since the declaration, he said. Prado said
that he asked the judiciary to request the Interior and Justice Ministry (MIJ) to
install meeting rooms inside the prisons to speed up granting benefits to inmates who
complete part of their sentences.
In the past, he has also suggested decentralizing the prison system and providing
activities for inmates to occupy them during idle time.
Prado made a direct appeal to the MIJ to guarantee the lives of people behind bars.
“Nevertheless, we observed that there persists a human butcher shop.
We will continue to make recommendations to the authorities (MIJ) even though they
discredit non-government organizations. With this they hope to cover up their
responsibility,” he said.
