Jackson's prime-time breast show sparks indecency inquiry
HOUSTON, United States (AFP) - America was agog and outraged after watching
pop star Justin Timberlake rip the bodice off Janet Jackson to reveal a
breast during the country's most watched television event.
The Federal Communications Communication (FCC), the main government media
watchdog, launched an inquiry to see whether the display of flesh by Michael
Jackson's little sister breached government indecency guidelines.
Amid interminable television re-runs of the bustier being wrenched off,
Timberlake and the show producers apologised and insisted it was an innocent
"wardrobe malfunction."
But FCC chairman Michael Powell said he had been "outraged" by events during
the half-time show of American football's Super Bowl at Houston, which was
watched by more than 100 million people.
"Like millions of Americans, my family and I gathered around the television
for a celebration. Instead that celebration was tainted by a classless,
crass and deplorable stunt," Powell said in a statement.
Powell said he had ordered a "thorough and swift" investigation.
President George W. Bush turned off his television just before Jackson
flashed her breast. But White House spokesman Scott McClellan told
reporters: "I think our view is that it's important for families to be able
to expect a high standard when it comes to programming."
Activist groups were quick to complain. Jan LaRue, chief counsel for the
conservative Concerned Women for America, called it a "pornographic show".
She accused the FCC of being too lax in enforcing indecency laws and blamed
the National Football League, which organises the Super Bowl, "for approving
a pornographic halftime show produced by MTV that was totally consistent wit
h MTV's pornography that they produce all of the time.
"We don't buy for a minute that this was not planned. Everybody knew what
was going on here."
The pop channel MTV has shocked viewers in the past with stunts such as
Madonna's lingering kiss with Britney Spears on the MTV awards last August.
The American Family Association (AFA) also said it was sure the
Jackson-Timberlake display was deliberate.
"Given their history of sexual performances, this type of incident is
standard fair. No one, especially those in charge of the show, was
surprised," said AFA chairman Don Wildmon.
Timberlake and Jackson were performing "Rock Your Body" during the 18 minute
interval show and Timberlake had just sung "I'll get you naked by the end of
this song" as he moved in to pull off a leather cup to expose Jackson's
breast adorned with a sun-shaped metal ring that pierced the nipple.
"I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the
halftime performance of the Super Bowl," Timberlake said in a statement. "It
was not intentional and is regrettable."
CBS television, which showed the championship game, quickly apologised after
being beseiged with complaints.
"We attended all rehearsals during the week, and there was no indication any
such thing would happen. We would like to apologise to anyone who was
offended," it said.
MTV, which like CBS is owned by Viacom, said: "The tearing of Janet
Jackson's costume was unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional and
was inconsistent with assurances we had about the content of the
performance."
But MTV's web site before the show had promised "shocking moments" during
Jackson's performance. And its first reports of the Super Bowl display
proclaimed: "Janet gets nasty".
The NFL said: "It's unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl
halftime."

In my opinion, a human breast exposed is not indecent. But all this
one-upmanship between all these no-talent fucks is...
This was obviously premeditated. And with respect to that, whoever is
responsible for planning to show us Janet Jackson's saggy augmented breast
should be tarred and feathered.

What I have to wonder is why the allegedly "normal" Jackson
would knowingly take part in a stunt exposing herself to
kids on TV while her brother is awaiting conviction for
sleeping with kids.
I've spent time at nude beaches in Canada, and I've seen tons
of nudity on TV (with CBC-French TV, I didn't need Playboy
growing up) so I'm hardly a prude. But I can empathize with
some of the backlash.
As for the stunt, I agree much of the reaction was overboard,
*however*, it's CBS's and the NFL's show. They brought in
MTV to help attract a younger audience or appeal to a wider
one; I highly doubt they would knowingly take part in something
that would alienate their audience.
If MTV wants to try this, why not do it on their own channel?
Or were they afraid the FCC would crack down, and by doing it
on another network avoiding some of the responsibility for it?
The NFL and CBS are complaining too much, but they still have
a valid gripe.

What's wrong with kids seeing boobs on TV? They are a part of
nature....half of them will have them one day and most of the other half
will have lots of interaction with them. This idea that nudity and the body
are bad for children to experience is really kind of sick.

Taking a ***** is a part of nature but I don't particularly want it
done on prime time television. Janet Jackson exposed herself.
There's a legal term for that - it is called "indecent exposure".
Would you have been as blase about this had Tustin Jimberlake whipped
out his pecker and waved it at the camera during the family hour?

Get a grip, dude.
*KABOOM* goes the irony meter.
Taking a ***** is a part of nature but I don't particularly want it
done on prime time television.
So you think the human body is as offensive as defication do you? Do you
hide the facts about going to the toilet from your children? Do you
chastise them for going to the toilet? Do you rant and rave and punish them
for making reference to it or when ever anything about it is put on TV? Do
you want toilet paper ads banned?
Janet Jackson exposed herself.
There's a legal term for that - it is called "indecent exposure".
A concept from the 19th century when the human body was considered indecent
and sinful. Please tell me why her breast was indecent?
Would you have been as blase about this had Tustin Jimberlake whipped

Another strawman.

Indecency???
For

What I have to wonder is why the allegedly "normal" Jackson

What's wrong with kids seeing boobs on TV? They are a part of
nature....half of them will have them one day and most of the other half
will have lots of interaction with them. This idea that nudity and the
body
are bad for children to experience is really kind of sick.

*KABOOM* goes the irony meter.
"Kaboom" goes the ether-soaked doobie you're obviously smoking.
Taking a ***** is a part of nature but I don't particularly want it
done on prime time television.
So you think the human body is as offensive as defication do you? Do you
*YOU* were railing about how you couldn't undestand why some folks
would be offended at something "natural"...I pointed out that just
because something is "natural" doesn't make it APPROPRIATE FOR PRIME
TIME TELEVISION VIEWING DURING THE HALFTIME SHOW AT THE SUPERBOWL, you
obtuse retard!
hide the facts about going to the toilet from your children?
Do you call your kids in and make them WATCH while you porduce a
steaming turd?
Do you
chastise them for going to the toilet?
strawman - did you forget to put on your tinfoil beanie? you're not
even making sense.
Do you rant and rave and punish them
for making reference to it or when ever anything about it is put on TV?
another strawman. we're talking about innapropriate behavior on prime
time television, and for the record, YES, i do think it is
innapropriate for children to make "doo doo" jokes at the dinner
table, and I would admonish them for doing so - there is a TIME AND A
PLACE for toilet humor, as is there a TIME AND A PLACE for exposing
one's breasts for reasons of titilation. The fact that you were never
taught this is increasingly obvious.
Do
you want toilet paper ads banned?
Do you want to actually WATCH video of someone wiping themselves?
Janet Jackson exposed herself.
There's a legal term for that - it is called "indecent exposure".
A concept from the 19th century when the human body was considered indecent
and sinful. Please tell me why her breast was indecent?
You again are confused. A breast is no more "indecent" than a penis
or a vagina. The indecency is in the innapropriate *EXPOSURE IN
PUBLIC* for no reason other shock value or titilation. Do you really
not understand this? Do you think, for example, it would be OK for a
female High School teacher to teach her class topless? Again, there
is an appropriate time and place.
Would you have been as blase about this had Tustin Jimberlake whipped
out his pecker and waved it at the camera during the family hour?
Another strawman.
Ah - when you finally realize the hypocrisy of the lame-assed argument
you are making, you come up with 'strawman'. But it ain't a
strawman...please tell me WHY a man exposing his penis is MORE
"indecent" than a women exposing her breasts? You can't. You lose.
You're done. Buh-bye.

I'd be willing to bet it wouldn't be difficult to come up with a whole
host of violations of obscenity, public lewdness and/or public
indecency laws that could be used to charge Ms. "see my titty"
Jackson, but I'm not surprised the Houston PD isn't going forward with
any type of criminal charges - it would be more trouble than it is
worth to go after a celebrity with buckets of money - one need only
look at the circus surrounding the other pillar of morality in the
Jackson family in Santa Barbara. Just because the PD decide not to
bring charges, doesn't make it any less illegal.

I would use "ridiculous" in place of "offensive," and as far as
whining goes, nobody whines like a Christian. They take after
their hero who whined about being forsaken and all kinds of
other things.

Doc, I find nothing offensive about breasts whatsover. What I do find
offensive is innapropriate behavior. Janet Jackson engaged in
innapropriate behavior by exposing herself on national tv in front of
families. Don't know about your family, but in mine, it is up to the
parents to teach the kids about sex, genitals, sexual activity,
etc...NOT the performers of the Halftime show during the Superbowl.

This argument is a wonderful argument and I've used it myself in
arguments with prudes who would want to ban the playboy channel, or
prevent someone from operating a business that sells sex magazines,
etc...and the argument in those situations works because when one
watches the playboy channel or goes into an adult bookstore, there is
the EXPECTATION that one will be exposed to nudity, sex, etc. It is
silly to claim to be "offended" about sex on the playboy channel when
one can simply turn the channel or not watch it in the first place.
There was NOT an EXPECTATION that the audience of the halftime show
during the superbowl, on prime time TV, would be exposed to a woman
exposing herself. It was not expected, so therefore, how could one
turn the channel to avoid it?
Nice try, though.

Woa, big surprise, Mr. Bi.
but not indecent.
The law and community standards begs to differ.
Go to Europe sometime.
Been there.
You'll
quickly discover that the human breast isn't the threat to
civilization you consider it to be.
Never said tits were a threat to civilization. I love them myself -
can't get enough of em. I'd have them for breakfast, lunch, and
dinner if I could. The question, if I can leave your strawman
argument and go back to the originial point, is about appropriate
behavior in public, particularly when one is on TV at a national
event, knowing full well and good that children will be watching. Ms.
Jackson's behavior was innapropriate. If it wasn't, then women would
be flashing themselves all over the place, now wouldn't they?

What I have to wonder is why the allegedly "normal" Jackson
would knowingly take part in a stunt exposing herself to
kids on TV
What's wrong with kids seeing boobs on TV? They are a part of
nature....half of them will have them one day and most of the other half
will have lots of interaction with them. This idea that nudity and the body
are bad for children to experience is really kind of sick.
That's 'hand in glove' with Christianity.

What I have to wonder is why the allegedly "normal" Jackson
would knowingly take part in a stunt exposing herself to
kids on TV while her brother is awaiting conviction for
sleeping with kids.
It was an accident. Both Janet and Justin said it was an accident, and her
boob was exposed for a split second, and she covered it up in embarrassment.
But even so, there's nothing wrong with boobs being sen on TV. Men show
their nipples on TV all the time, and it is sexist and anti-freedom not to
allow women to do the same. So what if kids see it? Kids watch TV in England
where boobs are seen in shampoo and soap commercials, and come away
unharmed. And it's not like kids haven't seen boobs before, boobs once
having been their primary food source.
