*Grumble* Ignorant Boss... |
I don't know if it's because she's a fundie (and therefore got her brain
switched off by religion) or because she's just utterly stupid.
Last night (Tuesday) we were doing an inventory at the local baptist
hospital gift shop. She was griping about having to write up the time sheet
in "military" time--"I HATE military time!" she said. I immediately thought
of the non-military organizations that use it--astronomers, for example--
and told her that it's actually "Universal" time. She scoffed and replied,
"We don't need anyone else's time! We're a nation unto ourself!"
Sheesh.
I bet she doesn't even realize that if it weren't for the brave workers
*cough* in China, she wouldn't have the American flag she waves so proudly
from the window of her Company van.
For that matter, it's a good bet she has no idea just how the economy and
the company rely on things like Japanese-made cell phones and laptops. If
the U.S. built a wall as she seems to think it should, excluding all
foreign trade, then the big stores we do inventory at wouldn't last very
long.

She probably also heard that it's called "metric time".

Considering I leared the 24 clock in the *US* Army, I have to wonder.
I honestly can't think in AM/PM anymore. I have to convert to 2400 in
my head. I've trained my wife to do it as well. :)
I bet she doesn't even realize that if it weren't for the brave workers

Seriously. If some of these idiots actually understood that we live
in a global economy, and about out only majot exports these days and
wheant and automobiles.

I bet she's not aware that there's no American manufacturer of VCR's. Sure,
an American company developed the technology--but the board members or
stock-holders couldn't see how to make a $100,000-per-unit machine into
quick profits.
So they sold it to the Japanese. The rest is history.
Color TV's? Similar stories--sell the manufacturing overseas. I don't think
anyone in the U.S. still builds them here (if I remember right, Curtis
Mathes was the last one standing in the mid-80's).
I wonder if this manager of mine would be willing to get rid of all the
things she's got that were imported? After all, she doesn't think this
country needs anyone else.
Funny how people like her seem to wish for a return to those pre-Ozzy and
Harriet days of isolationism.

Ampex (or Ampeg?)--back in the 1960, early '70s if I'm remembering the
article right (electronics mag from the early 80's). About the only people
who had a use for a $100,000 video machine were TV broadcasters, so there
wasn't an enormous market. They might have sold to Sony. One of these days
I'll have to dig that article out and look it over again.

Tape cylinders then reel-to-reel tape. Totally different formats and
technologies from cassettes. (You can even see when a show is played
back [or dubbed] from an old cylinder recording. There's a vertical
break somewhere in the picture - a very thin black line. That's the
seam where the ends of the cylinder were spliced.)
JVC developed VHS; Sony developed Beta.

Uh, kind of. The head spun down around the inside of the cylinder,
from what I remember. But it was totally different technology.

I still fondly remember holding the brake on a color wheel to watch
color TV being broadcast by CBS.

When you're talking about military time, presumably you mean "Zulu
Time" complete with those funny clocks that go 360 degrees in 24
hours?
It's GMT of course. Which is there were a God is what He would have
intended, God being an Englishman and so on. We only allowed it to be
called "UTC" to further confuse you, and if WWIII should start, it had
better be done after we've had breakfast.
Or are we talking a git here who can't add or subtract 12 hours as

We're talking about a git (gitette?) who doesn't want to be bothered with
using the 24-hour format. She's one of those who does things a certain way
because it's "always" been done that way. Inches, miles, pounds, AMERICAN
TIME, all that jazz. Though she wouldn't listen to jazz--that's devil music
that makes people "do things."
She'd freak out if she had to deal with one of those 360-degree in 24 hours
clocks.
Hell, she probably thinks Greenwich Mean Time means the city in
Connecticut, not that other one in that other country we don't need.

They're probably not True Americans. True Americans tell the time in
feet and inches.
I annoy people by dating things AUC. (The Roman calender, "year of
the city")
So it's .... the year 2756, give or take?
Naaahhhhhh, more like 63,017
Year after humans started recording stuff on cave walls and the like.
You know, after we became sort of literate. And recorded history started.
Drives my fundy coworkers nuts, "You men humans have been recording
their story for LONGER then 6,000 years?". They sure can screw their
faces up into funny shapes when they try.

Sad but likely true, Therion. Most Americans have retained a most
inadequate education.

It's commonly said, but is the US school system really that bad? Here
in the UK it's a popular moan that "schools isn't like it was in my
day...," and that standards are slipping ("A" levels allegedly getting
easier and so on) but not one with much foundation as far as I can
see.

I know Science A-Levels didn't get easier. I did mine a few years back, and
we could practise on ones all the way back to 1980 and get equally good
marks.

I don't think the teaching is getting much worse, although math is
being taught very badly, English seems to be optional and science is
being taught by teachers who took a semester of General Science in
college.
But the lack of retention seems to be widening. Those who compete in
the Intel Science Search (or whatever they've renamed it these days)
are still probably among the brightest and best educated people on the
planet, but the ratio of them to the ones who retain only enough to
get by ("I can't make change - the register is broke [sic]") seems to
be getting lower.
We have a few hundred foreigners where I work (most of the employees
are immigrants), and they seem to be better educated, about most
things, than the American kids we hire and, for the most part, aren't
sad to see go after a year or two.
Or maybe it's just my Aristotelian pessimism setting in? (Was it he
who commented about the dissolution of youth?)

Math seems, with rare exception to always be taught badly.
In 1981 I worked at a HS where the math and science teacher taught by rote
and only the English teacher did any problem solving work.
The Junior Varsity coach was put into teaching a remedial math class to
incoming freshmen and *he* couldn't do the math.
Among the harder questions: "What percent of 16 is 4?"
But there were a few bright ones.
I had one of my kids write (on his own time and because he asked for a
challenge) a complete payroll package that did California and Fed taxes.
Federal is easy.
He did it in Visi-calc on a TRS Model III.

I was taught math in the 50s, before "the new math" and all that crap.
We learned to use math, and we learned math itself. But the attitude
was that learning, for its own sake, was worth pursuing. And it was
fun, for the most part.
Not just me - a whole school full of students, about 6,000 at a time,
IIRC.

I think the educational system could be improved (mostly by improving the
quality of students entering into it). The REAl problem, though, is
intellectual inertia coupled with cultural chauvinism.

There's a little bit of parental attitude to blame also. The attitude
that it's the school's job, not the parents', to educate the children.
The attitude that, regardless of how much the kids retain, they still
won't amount to anything, so why should the kids bother, and why
should the parents push them. Then, of course, there are those kids
who are, in all but name, orphans - that doesn't help either.
