It's a shame that the culture of death that has developed in this world
deprived Terri of her chance to live a meaningful life.

Oh, give it up. Although every real doctor new her case
was hopeless while you retards were pretending it was
not, even the fake doctors knew it was hopeless after
the autopsy.
Most of her brain was gone. Period. Even her visual
cortex was gone. Not only could she never think, she
couldn't even see.
Ironic, considering the many, many, many, many, claims
that she was following objects with her eyes...

With no functioning brain in her head that was not possible. Her brain had
turned to liquid. All that was left was artificially living flesh. There was
no human being there anymore.

Reluctantly seconded. The topic here has only the vaguest connection
to atheism. Perhaps theists would argue that Terri Schiavo had a soul
while atheists would consider someone in Terri Schiavo's state to be
already dead. Otherwise I don't see the connection.

Since the original post on this message never appeared on either of my news
servers, I'm going to venture a guess that the original post was referring
to the recent success of mid thalamic electrical stimulation in returning
brain injured patients to a more functional state of consciousness... If
you do your homework, you will find that Terry Schiavo was one of the first
patients to receive this treatment. It failed.

No, I'm pretty sure it was the fact that her brain had
turned into soup that did that.
Are you lying again, so soon after your return?
See, the crucial difference in the two cases is that
the one you linked to actually HAD a brain to put
implants into. Schiavo didn't. End.

She was just like you: no brain left.
http://abstractappeal.com/schiavo/infopage.html
The Second District's first opinion in this case explained:
Since 1990, Theresa has lived in nursing homes with constant care. She
is fed and hydrated by tubes. The staff changes her diapers regularly.
She has had numerous health problems, but none have been life
threatening.
Over the span of this last decade, Theresa's brain has deteriorated
because of the lack of oxygen it suffered at the time of the heart
attack. By mid 1996, the CAT scans of her brain showed a severely
abnormal structure. At this point, much of her cerebral cortex is
simply gone and has been replaced by cerebral spinal fluid. Medicine
cannot cure this condition. Unless an act of God, a true miracle, were
to recreate her brain, Theresa will always remain in an unconscious,
reflexive state, totally dependent upon others to feed her and care
for her most private needs.
In a later opinion in the same case, the Second District further
explained:
Although the physicians are not in complete agreement concerning the
extent of Mrs. Schiavo's brain damage, they all agree that the brain
scans show extensive permanent damage to her brain. The only debate
between the doctors is whether she has a small amount of isolated
living tissue in her cerebral cortex or whether she has no living
tissue in her cerebral cortex.
Now, get a grip...

Improbable.
I am sure the judge who decided on the case wasn't stupid,
so the chances that Terry Schiavo even existed as a potential
conscious being must have been slim indeed.
(According to the docters that were actually on the case about zero)
By the way
The whole lawcase wasn't about Terry at All
it was about her inheritance that would go to her parental family
if her husband would have to difforce her instead of becoming a
widower
So both sides on the issue had financial motives.
(of course they both claimed to have humane motives)
Again I snipped all NG's except alt.atheism
What on earth made you include a NG about homosexuality?

Coma patient wakes up - Technique for brain injuries promise for future
I understand there are rare cases where this does happen and Coma
patients will wake up. However, in the case or Terri Schiavo, as much
as I hate to say this, she was better off being allowed to pass on.
From reviewing the medical testimonies that I have read, following up
on other decisions from the medical community, it does not appear that
there was any hope for her. There are times where we have to trust
our medical professionals and allow matters to fall into God's
hands.
I believe that overall for Terri and the people who cared for her, the
decision to shut off the life support was the right thing to do.
Consider for a moment, if you were in her shoes. Would you want to
live like she did, if you consider that living at all?
Consider for a moment her family, the pain and suffering they went
through. Is it right to continue that pain and suffering knowing that
there is no hope? Isn't it better to just allow matters to fall into
Gods hands and let her pass on, so the living can grieve and move on
in life?
I struggled with this too Young; however, facts are..what they are.
There is a saying, "It is what it is", and she simply didn't have a
chance.
I don't know all the medical terminology involved and I'm not going to
pretend to be a medical expert; however, I trust the the doctors were
right on this one.
If you truly do have faith in God and believe there is life after
death, accept the fact that she is probably in a better place and no
longer suffering. I hope her family is healing and moving on as well.

For as far I know, Terri Schiavo was starved to death. At the end she
was breathing on her own. This is the most painfull death you can
think of.
For all the people, who are making jokes on her brain, shame on you.
Even Terri was human.
If it would happen to me, I might hope to have people who where
willing to fight for me like her family did.
