Kerry: Arafat Is No Longer a 'Statesman'
John Kerry is flip-flopping again in response to the New York Post's
revelation that he praised Muslim terrorist leader Yasser Arafat a
"role model" and "statesman" at least as recently as 1997.
If Clinton Did It, It's OK
But the attempt at damage control could well backfire. "He was [a
statesman] in 1995," the Associated Press today quoted Kerry as
insisting Monday. To support this claim, he recalled the Clinton
administration's failed dealings with the top terrorist.
Kerry claimed he no longer viewed Arafat favorably. "As far as I'm
concerned, he's an outlaw to the peace process," he said.
'Obviously'
"Obviously, Yasser Arafat has been an impediment to the peace process.
He missed a historic opportunity, and he's proved himself to be
irrelevant," the Massachusetts Democrat said.
Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., speaking on behalf of the Bush campaign,
denounced Kerry's recent support of the Arab terrorist. "Yasser Arafat
has been a terrorist from the beginning to the middle to the end," he
noted.
Kerry's stance has upset some Jewish leaders, the New York Post's
Deborah Orin reported today.
"By 1997, we knew that Arafat had done nothing to change the promotion
of hatred and murder of Jews in Palestinian Authority media and
refused to outlaw Hamas and Islamic Jihad," said Mort Klein, head of
Zionist Organization of America.
"In 1997, to have said that is really shocking."
More Deception From Kerry
Jason Maoz of JewishPress.com reported today on Front Page that Kerry
was deceitful in blaming a staff error for his threat to name Jimmy
Carter, Bill Clinton or James Baker as a Middle East "peace" envoy.
"I spoke to [Kerry] about that very issue, saying that was not
something that was going to be very popular in the Jewish community,"
New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said. "John Kerry
assured me that neither Jimmy Carter nor Baker would be his choice.
Kerry is saying, 'Look, this is a mistake.'"
According to the Forward, "Silver said Kerry told him that when he
realized staffers had inserted the names of Carter and Baker into a
draft of his speech, 'he had requested they be removed, but was told
that the draft
remarks already had been distributed to reporters, so there was no way
to deliver the speech minus the names without causing a stir.'"
However, Rick Richman of the blog Jewish Current Issues compared the
"as prepared for delivery" version of Kerry's speech on Kerry's Web
site with what Kerry said, based on the transcript posted on Council
on Foreign Relations' Web site.
Prepared remarks: "... I will appoint a Presidential Ambassador to the
Peace Process who will report directly to me and the Secretary of
State - and who will work day-to-day to move that process forward.
There are a number of uniquely qualified Americans who I would
consider appointing, including:President Carter, former Secretary of
State James Baker, or, as I suggested almost two years ago, President
Clinton."
In the speech, Kerry said the above and added: "And I might add, I
have had conversations with both President Clinton and President
Carter about their willingness to do this, and I think they would
welcome it and embrace it as a means of moving forward."
In a question-and-answer session after the speech, Kerry again touted
Carter and Baker.
Maoz concludes:
"Richman sums it up perfectly: Kerry 'met with Arafat. After September
11. After Bill Clinton blamed Arafat for the Oslo collapse. After
George W. Bush refused to meet with Arafat. After Arafat had commenced
a barbaric war against Israel. After that - and in the midst of that -
he meets with Arafat. And he came away from that meeting thinking the
answer is to appoint Jimmy Carter as presidential envoy and start the
negotiations with Taba.'"
