Happy Distraction |
Brett Somers. Remember her?
An actress going *way* back, Brett Somers
was also known as the ex wife of Jack Klugman,
"Oscar Madison" on TV's "The Odd Couple." In
one of life's little ironies, Brett was herself cast
in the role of Oscar Madison's ex wife for the
show.
Brett's most famous role -- and the one that endeared
her to millions -- was playing herself on the "Match
Game," which, during its heyday, was the most
popular game show in America. Seated next to
Charles Nelson Reilly for most of the shows lengthy
run, Brett Somers came to define "Fag Hag" (or "fruit
Fly") to an entire generation of gay people.
You can still see Brett Somers, trading quips with
Charles, on repeats of "Match Game" which run
on cables "Gameshow Network."
If you want real Diva power though, 30 year old
television re-runs just aren't enough, and you'll
want to catch one of her live performances. Yes, she's
still alive, and she's still performing. Hence, "live
performance."
Brett Somers will be in Boston this Saturday, and
if Boston isn't enough of a draw she'll be appearing
for two shows in New York City later this month.
