I'll never be an Irish Catholic, but I'll celebrate it anyway, without your
approval. A green Shiner Bock is always in order on the 17th.

Who on earth would want to be an "irish catholic", J(erk) Young, even for
one day? Better that focus our efforts towards protecting young boys from
the pedophile catholic priests and their degenerate church hierarchy.

Wow! That's really good! What's your next post about? Does it refer to
African Americans and their love of watermelon and fried chicken? Nice

WTF does that mean? Do "everyone" gets to be Jewish on Hannukah or
Muslim on Ramadan? Why would I want to be "an Irish Catholic" (whatever
that means... I don't judge people by their beliefs, but by their deeds
and words...)? Why would I "enjoy it"? I'm perfectly happy with who I
am... You, on the contrary, seems to have serious issues with your own
identity...
Why don't you stop sending nonsensical postings for a while and try to
become a better person meanwhile?
Why are you posting this to "alt.california, alt.politics.bush,

Well, here in Montreal, it is now St. Patricks day and in the Churches
it is celebrated as such, and those who attend these masses are
celebrating the original intent, especially at St. Patricks Basilica.
http://collections.ic.gc.ca/relig/spatr/spatrexe.htm
It is not a bank holiday here.
It seems hard for a lot of people to sythesize the idea that it has
evovled into something more. A day for celebrating the Celtic spirit as
well. Even google is covered in shamrocks
In Montreal, we say everybody is Irish on St. Patrick's Day. At the
parade (on sunday) there will be hundreds of thousands of people, not
just those whose ancestors came from Ireland, all celebrating together,
as we have done every year for the past 182 years.
A green line will be painted down the middle of St. Catherine st along
the parade route
Afterward, people go to pubs and drink green beer.. some even get
plastered. I don't recall ever hearing anyone arguing about whether it
is a religious holiday or not.

As big green hats and Guinness cans begin to fill the
world's biggest cities for this year's St Patrick's Day, it has
emerged that gay groups have been rejected from taking part
in the New York parade.
The annual Irish celebration which is embraced by all cultures
irrelevant of the nationality, has been thrown into a gay rights
debate after the chairman of the Manhattan parade, John
Dunleavy, blocked an approach from New York's gay council
leader, Christine Quinn, to allow gay groups to join the march.
He accused the Irish Lesbian and Gay organisation of "dirty
pool tactics" and using the parade as a tool for publicity.
Ms Quinn, who pushed for gay groups of 150,000 people to
be allowed on the march, was told that she was welcome to
join in as a representative of the New York city council,
but not as part of a gay group.
St Patrick's Day is on March 17.

Gay groups have been taking part in the St. Patrick's Day

Not to those of us who are still predominantly Irish genetically and/or

One of the churches in Ireland.
Andrealphus is not wrong - there are plenty of people in Ireland who don't
regard Paddy's day as a religious holiday or indeed as much more than a day off
work. Especially in Dublin.

Unless you have sway over all the bishops of Ireland, it is and

Ireland is a country, not a church. And unless the bishops of Ireland have sway
over all the people of Ireland then Paddy's day is a bank holiday.

Not to those of us who are still predominantly Irish genetically
and/or culturally, unlike most who claim their sliver if Irish
heritage only once a year! FYI, it's first a religious holiday.

It's not even a religious holiday in Ireland.

Umm...yes it is. It's a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics in
Ireland. (Now get that foot out of your mouth!)

Ummm... No it's not. A few may celibrate it in a religious way,
very few
as far as I could tell during my stay in Dublin, and that's only before
hitting the local pub to get good and drunk. (Now get that foot out

A tourist stay in Dublin (chuckle) harldy make you an expert in
anything Irish or the Holy Days of Obligation of the Church in Ireland.

One of the churches in Ireland.

Andrealphus is not wrong - there are plenty of people in Ireland who
don't regard Paddy's day as a religious holiday or indeed as much more
than a day off work. Especially in Dublin.

Unless you have sway over all the bishops of Ireland, it is and
remains a Holy Day of Obligation.

Ireland is a country, not a church. And unless the bishops of Ireland
have sway over all the people of Ireland then Paddy's day is a bank
holiday.

In the future, it's best not to post
on things you have absolutely no knowledge of.

Christmas day is a legal holiday too. I suppose we can use the same
logic and say it has nothing to do with Christ or the Church, since not
all people in our countries go to mass on Christmas day.

One of the churches in Ireland.

The Church with a capitol "c" (as written). It doesn't have to be
explained. You're just nit-picking.

Andrealphus is not wrong - there are plenty of people in Ireland who don't

What or how people personally regard the day is irrelevant nor does it
have anything to do with its religious standing. It's "Saint Patrick's
Day" which is a Church holy day (holiday). As I said, "it is first a
religious holiday" being the feast of the Saint; there wouldn't be a
holiday otherwise.

No one said it was. The issue is that St. Patrick's Day is a religious
holiday and a Holy Day of Obligation in the Irish Church.

You missed the point entirely. The previous poster thought he could
declare what is a religious day of obligation for a religion.

You must mean the Church of Scientology in Middle Abbey Street. That's how they
write 'Church'. :p

Sure there wouldn't. If some theologian somewhere forgot to carry the 1, or
whatever spurious 'miracle' was used to make Patrick a saint was discovered to
be just a bad case of food poisoning, and if the Pope declared that it was no
longer a holy day of obstinance, what would happen?
Nothing much. It would still be a public holiday in Ireland. People the world
over would still go on wearing "Kiss me, I'm Irish" hats and tshirts and
guinness hats and the like, and celebrate it or ignore it just as they do now.
I'll also note that it is quite unusual to see people wearing "Kiss me, I
believe in the Holy Trinity" gear, with the possible exception of the odd Irish
priest or bishop.

Unless you have sway over all the bishops of Ireland, it is and
remains a Holy Day of Obligation.

No one said it was. The issue is that St. Patrick's Day is a religious

Regardless of how the Scientologists feel about it, now it is mainly a
pseudo-Irish celebration, and mainly a bank holiday in Ireland.

And unless the bishops of Ireland have sway
over all the people of Ireland then Paddy's day is a bank holiday.

You missed the point entirely. The previous poster thought he could
declare what is a religious day of obligation for a religion.

And you and the original poster of this thread seem to think you can declare
what a public holiday is REALLY about, even for people of other religions and of
none.
