I find it hard to believe they needed to do a study about this. That's
the definition of (thus reason behind) the word 'scapegoat,' isn't it?

Actually, someone did a study on that ;) They found that, when
presented with various psychological research findings, most people
claimed that they already knew that, it was obvious etc. The
interesting thing was that the "findings" presented were in fact the
exact opposite of the real research findings...

Oh yeah, that's a big problem with psychological research. Not just what
you point out, but more generally, no matter what you say, people will say
"oh, we knew that already". "Common sense" is a fun thing. For example,
are people more attracted by sameness or by difference? "Birds of a feather
flock together" vs "opposites attract". Or how about 'absence makes the
heart grow fonder' vs 'out of sight is out of mind'?
Besides, the point is not just to confirm what we already we expect.... it's
to get some numbers. Once we have a solid idea of what the effect is, we
can test what circumstances vary it, if some factors make it stronger or
weaker, and so on. It's just that those kinds of studies don't get as much
public notice...

I think it was a British study that found evidence of women being
moody may be linked to their monthly reproductive cycle. It wasn't
that they researched it that bothered me. It was that the research was
funded by a U.S. grant. We couldn't find anyone in America to research
this?

Nah, the women in America are too dangerous at that time.
Actually, the way it works is that a scientist applies for a grant to
research something. Or a company will fund a study, but this sounds
more like the former case. So it is not a matter of attmepting to find
someone to do the study, rather it is a matter of the scientist looking
for money to conduct a study.

I imagine it would help to have a government official who for a
consideration promises to troubleshoot the process. Oh, no! That would
be wrong, wouldn't it? There's obviously no government corruption
involved in grant monies.

Yeah, some people, when they hear the word "government" immediately assume
everyone involved is corrupt. The reality is that there is very little
corruption in our various governments. And there are a lot of people who
spend alot of time looking for it. And it is so relatively rare that it
is a big story when some corruption or dishonesty is found.

I think a useful metaphor for this sort of thing is the cowpox/smallpox
connection that led to the first immunizations. The thing was folklore for
generations, and those old wives would have had every right to complain
that those obtuse scientists just refused to listen to them the whole time
while they "checked out" what the wives already knew. The fact that the
scientists developed a _mechanism_, and that the old wives "knew"
thousands of other things that _weren't_ true doesn't really make a mark,
does it?
