Object: Harry Potter Bigger Than God?!
John Lennon is frequently accused of having said that the Beatles were
"bigger than God". He never said it, of course. What he said was
that "We're more popular than Jesus now".
It wasn't a claim, but an observation on people's values, and of
course it was misunderstood by knee-jerk Americans who went on a
Beatles paraphernalia-trashing rampage. As Eric Idle put it in "The
Rutles" - "...album sales soared - people were buying them just to
burn them" (or words to that effect).
Now that's all in the past, but what about Harry Potter?
GrrlScientist, who is quite clearly obsessed with him, jokingly asks
if he's bigger than God in an interesting observation about how the
book is being released in Israel, where the release date coincides
(near enough) with their sabbath:

Apparently Judaists are not even supposed to *read* on the sabbath. I
guess that lets the Torah out!
What the hell kind of pathetic trash is that? Seriously? No
reading? One more reason to completely reject religion.

Reading may lead to learning about new ideas. Ideas may lead to
thought. Thought may lead to the realization that there is no god.

A local church here thinks Harry Potter is more popular.
They sent out leaflets inviting people to hear how Harry Potter
supports many biblical principles.

And they would be right. Almost any fiction book that is from the
western world will. Given the Self Contradictory Bible can be used to
support any position, any postion can be used to support biblical
principles.

It's not reading that's prohibited - the book goes on sale on Saturday
morning, so they can't BUY it until Sunday.
