Object: Hate crimes against hurricane evacuees
There are somewhere around 300 evacuees here in my hometown and the
surrounding areas. The area I live in is almost 100% white, and there are
lots of ***** racist crackers here. My mother told me today that this guy
that I went to school with put a large confederate flag on his vehicle, and
drove by the camp where these evacuees are staying, and started hollering
and making an ***** of himself. It's embarrassing. We should be going out of
our way to make these guys feel as welcome and as comfortable as possible,
after the hell they went through, and instead we have pieces of ***** doing
things like this.

What a doofus. Why don't you write a letter to the editor of your local
paper? You don't have to call the jerk by name.

Ouch. People say that Yankees are obnoxious, especially New Yorkers and
people from "Joisey", but assholes like you just described above are one of
the main reasons why I left the South :(

Robyn, when were you in the south, and where?
The reason I ask is, I never hear the N word down here unless it's with
a northern accent.
The kids in the local high school do display the Confederate flag --
but it's become such a rebellion against authority sort of thing (the
school banned it) that the black kids are wearing it, too.
The only person I actually know in the Klan is my husband's uncle, who
lives in Missouri.
Perhaps it's because I'm in a higher density, more diverse area, but
the racism as you describe it doesn't exist among the locals to near
the extent it's being imported in. It *was* -- I know that. Cross
burnings happened as late as the 70's. But we don't have riots, and
more than anything, there's a cross section of races represented all
over in the economic spectrum.

Robyn, when were you in the south, and where?

Gainesville, FL from September 1979 to August 1984.

The reason I ask is, I never hear the N word down here unless it's with
a northern accent.

Well, believe me, I heard it PLENTY of times with a southern one. People
didn't talk like that where I grew up. .

The kids in the local high school do display the Confederate flag --
but it's become such a rebellion against authority sort of thing (the
school banned it) that the black kids are wearing it, too.
The only person I actually know in the Klan is my husband's uncle, who
lives in Missouri.

I remember seeing Klan pamphlets around campus at the University of Florida
on several occasions. I was shocked.

I didn't leave the south just because of racism. That was just one of
several aspects that drove me away.

They have Klan rallies in my hometown from time to time. Around 1999, they
stood out on the corner of the main intersection in town and spewed their
hate.

Wow, I've certainly never encountered it that up close and personal. Then
again, I live in NJ and if they tried that here, they'd probably get

Holy cow.
I thought they'd all moved to the northwest, with the rest of the Aryan
Nation fellows.
Last rally I saw was on TV, maybe ten or fifteen years ago. It was
ridiculous -- probably seven or eight people marching down a small
street, looking self conscious about the cameras.
How many people were at the one in 1999?

I have lived in the US south off and on for decades, I've yet to
see a clan rally or a cross burning, except once on TV. This
rally was in the mid west.

Perhaps the school should read the students the cornerstone speech and
explain why the flags are banned.

LOL!
But that's not why they were banned.
They were banned because this area became a focus for the NAACP for a
bit; people began to display the flags simply in opposition to them.
It was feared that it would cause riots and such at the school, but it
never did.

Once upon a time in alt.atheism, dear sweet

The kids in the local high school do display the Confederate flag --

school banned it) that the black kids are wearing it, too.
The only person I actually know in the Klan is my husband's uncle, who
lives in Missouri.

There's a camp out here in SoCal on the Old Ridge Route that displays the
Confederate flag. Weird, like a commune for wayward survivalists or
something. The Ridge Route was laid out in 1915, paved in 1919 or so, and
was the only way back then to get from Los Angeles to Bakersfield. Without
it, California nearly became two states because of the formidable barrier
formed by the Tehapachi Mountains. The road was excavated with mule-drawn
steam shovels. Then along came technology, and Highway 99 was laid in
1933, then Interstate 5 in the 1970s. The old Ridge Route is still
accessable if you don't mind sections that are washed out and potholed.
It's kind of a neat piece of history, actually.

Yes, I found the same. I remember being shocked at all the people that
would just say hello to you on the street down South, but damn, the rednecks
were terrifying. And I was pretty opinionated and once played "New York,
New York" at a well-known redneck biker bar just to be obnoxious. I'm lucky

That's bad news but it will make the partners of the New Orleans
dieoff quiet happy. Racism allows idiots in high places not to be
confronted and made responsible for their actions because those who
should be confronting are either at the end of racist abuse or or have
had their anger and fear redirected towards the wrong people. Energy
should instead be directed at getting Bush and co impeached and
imprisoned. Racism is such a waste of energy. Racism is political
entropy.

drove by the camp where these evacuees are staying, and started hollering
and making an ***** of himself. It's embarrassing. We should be going out of
our way to make these guys feel as welcome and as comfortable as possible,
after the hell they went through, and instead we have pieces of ***** doing
things like this.

You should've figured it out by now - anything advocating hatred,
bigotry and anti-humanity, dukkake's all for it.
