The Sound of Music is a seriously religious film, its plot a fairytale
version of modern Christian history

I was glad to hear that Songs of Praise is planning a special edition
devoted to the 40th birthday of The Sound of Music, to be broadcast
next month. Last Christmas BBC1 offered a Graham Norton camp-fest
tribute to the musical, with Denise Van Outen covering My Favourite
Things. Julie Andrews she ain't. Songs of Praise is a far more fitting
forum. For this is a seriously religious film. Let the camp tittering
cease while its spiritual significance is finally acknowledged.
