Hello to the group |
Hello
After reading for quite a while and only answering occasionally, I'd like to
introduce myself and then maybe contribute a bit more.
You can see my real name in the AA list, I chose the aka "Wieland" because I
live close to Siegen in Germany, and that's where Wieland the Smith lived
in the old times, according to one of the sagas and to a book on Merlin
(Merlin owned a ring that had ben made by Wieland of the town of Siegen).
And besides, I'm an engineer. I'm married an we have two sons, both
university students.
Born 1948, I grew up in western Germany in a family of long atheist
tradition (at least 5 generations)- yes, this is old Europe here.
As there are different atheist traditions here in Europe, I should mention
that already my great-great grandfather was socialist, at a time when the
Socialdemocratic Party was prosecuted. Well times have changed a little,
but I'm a member of the same old party.
As most of the people in this ng live in the US, it may be interesting that
I graduated in 1967 (that was a good class, was it not) from a high school
in Michigan, and I travel to the US on business rather frequently, last
time in early December I spent a few days in the Heart of the Heartland, or
at least close to it (southern Illinois).
Then I'd like to explain why I want to be the herder of the trolls; I
traveled to Norway several times, and I like this country. In Norway they
sell Troll figures almost everywhere, and I own 2 figures and 3 wonderful
paintings of trolls. I will will ask the worst trolls posting in this ng to
send me their pictures of themselves, and I will make all troll pictures
available to the group.
For those who are interested, I'm using Linux and Knode as reader
Have a wonderful 2004 everybody!

I was using Donald Rumsfeld's definition, he called France, Belgium, and
Germany "old Europe", and UK, Poland and Spain "new Europe".
When did the US last add a star?

Britain is the one that lives in the past and can't keep up.
Many people in UK have a different view on that, but it's not easy to define
progress these days.

No need to do that, here in Europe we turned the meening around, like the
representatives of several nations in the debate in the UN security council
just a few days before the start of the war against Iraque. They prainsed
France for the old culture and the French representative received applause
for his reply (March 10).
The phrase "Old Europe" in German translation has made it to the top of the
list of words of the year by the German linguistic society, and we use it
with a positive meaning.
Isn't this a good example of linguistic subversion?

well, it's rather complicated. Our present federal government is a coalition
of Social Democrats and Greens (most of the leading people in our
government are not active church members, by the way). In order to fight
the high unemployment (4.5 Mio) they believe it's necessecary to lower the
cost of employment and have high government spending at the same time.
That caused the deficit, which is large compared to what was planned, but
small compared to the US budget deficit.
I don't quite believe in the need to reduce the cost of employment, that can
always be said, independent of the real situation. And there are some
interesting numbers: The German trade surplus in 2003 was more than 130
billion Euros, the highest ever, and Germany has replaced the US as the No.
One export nation of the world.
But Neo-Liberalism found many believers here in Germany, even in the SPD.
And the worst thing is, most people don't realise that it's an ideology,
they believe it's plain truth, and therefore they don't measure it against
success or failure. Thus, if a small dosis does not help, they call for the
bigger dosis instead of questioning the type of medicine.

True, we do not have a strict separation of Government and churches here in
Germany, church tax is beeing collected by the government, the bishops are
beeing payed by the government, and in most states we have religion classes
in school.
On the other side, only 61% of the population still are members of the
official churches, and every year it's getting better, more and more people
opt not to pay church taxes (I never payed).
In some parts of eastern Germany (Brandenburg and Berlin) the percentage of
unchurched people is so high, that it was decided not to have religeon
classes in school.
And there is another bright side: Our present government is full of
atheists, and I assume that atheists are even over-represented in the
parliarment. The reason is that of the 6 parties in our parliament 3 have
athiest traditions (SPD, FDP, PDS), 2 are Christian by definition (CDU,
CSU), and 1 doesn't care (Greens/B90).The majority is held by SPD and
Greens.
Only our president J. Rau is rather frank about his religeous belief, but he
is tolerant, and he doesn't have much power.
You see simmilar trends in other European countries, so Europeans tend to be
rather supprised to see how much fuss the religeous people make in the US
politics, and the the discussions on not teaching evolution in US schools
are always good for a laugh here in Europe.
In order to fight
the high unemployment (4.5 Mio)
Which is what percentage of the workforce?
around 8%, but the counting s done a little different in each country.
Anyway, it's very high

But Neo-Liberalism found many believers here in Germany, even in the SPD.
The Neo-Liberalism is less liberal than the
old liberalism?
It's funny to see how different the meaning of the word "liberal" is here
compared to the US. In Germany "liberal" means pro free-market, pro privat
business ownership, and separation of government and churches.
Neo-liberalisms we typically assotiate with globilisation, deregulation,
reducing the influence of government in the field of economics and lowering
the taxes. How would you use the term neo-liberalism?
And the worst thing is, most people don't realise that it's an ideology,
they believe it's plain truth, and therefore they don't measure it

I totally agree, there are some nice parallels between religeous beliefs and
economic theories, including the fact that people say my belief is the
truth and everything else is ideology.

Hello
After reading for quite a while and only answering occasionally, I'd like
to introduce myself and then maybe contribute a bit more.
You can see my real name in the AA list, I chose the aka "Wieland" because
I live close to Siegen in Germany, and that's where Wieland the Smith
lived in the old times, according to one of the sagas and to a book on
Merlin (Merlin owned a ring that had ben made by Wieland of the town of
Siegen). And besides, I'm an engineer. I'm married an we have two sons,
both university students.
As most of the people in this ng live in the US, it may be interesting
that I graduated in 1967 (that was a good class, was it not) from a high
school in Michigan, and I travel to the US on business rather frequently,
last time in early December I spent a few days in the Heart of the
Heartland, or at least close to it (southern Illinois).
Then I'd like to explain why I want to be the herder of the trolls; I
traveled to Norway several times, and I like this country. In Norway they
sell Troll figures almost everywhere, and I own 2 figures and 3 wonderful
paintings of trolls. I will will ask the worst trolls posting in this ng
to send me their pictures of themselves, and I will make all troll
pictures available to the group.
For those who are interested, I'm using Linux and Knode as reader
Have a wonderful 2004 everybody!
Guten Tag! Glad to meet you. I am a Linux user myself, though I use Pan
as my newsreader. I have long felt that using Linux and being an atheist
go hand-in-hand. Many theists seem to be so because they were taught that
way, and never really consider that alternatives are available. Same with
PC OS's. Human nature is wonderfully entertaining.

Wow! My same thoughts. I use Linux and Windows. I use Pan in both. I
need to give Knode a try. I'm a KDE user.
