HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BOOK |
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BOOK
I highly recommend this book
Not because I know Mike or helped him in his research as he wrote briefs
and the like prior to his appearance before the USSR but because of its
documenting how the media reacted and the lousy job they did.
The hardback version is quite expensive (roughly 60.00) but you can
get a paperback version which is reasonable and worth it. (22.00)
I bought the paperback version

BTW the oral arguments for the new Pledge case is set for December 4, 2007
in front of a 3 judge panel of the 9th Circuit of Appeals in California.
Once more, as far as I know Mike, will be doing his own oral arguments.

Hi, Jim.
It appears that the oral arguments in both the Pledge and the Motto cases
have been scheduled at last. Both will be heard on Dec 4 in SF.
Let's just hope we get two or three fair judges.

Now for the book
"TAKING ON THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE, The News Media and Michael
Newdow's Vonstitutional Challenge" Ronald Bishop. State Univerity of
New York Press. (2007)
From the Backcover
"Taking on the Pledge of Allegiance explores" a landmark lawsuit filed
by avowed atheist Michael Newdow against the Elk Grove United School
District in California, in which he claimed the words "under God" in
the pledge of allegiance amounted to an unconstitutional endorsement
of religion. Newdow's original suit was ignored by the public and the
news media until June 26, 2002, when the Ninth Circuit Court of
Appeals ruled the Pledge of Allegiance was unconstitutional. This
decision touched off a firestorm of negative reaction, both from the
politicians and from the public. The US Supreme Court eventually
overturned the ruling on Flag Day 2004.
This book contains interviews with many of the parties involved,
including Newdow and journalists who covered the case. Ronald bishop
examines how the news media marginalized Newdow after the Ninth
Circuit ruling — acting as a "guard dog" for the government and for
the ideas supposedly at the ideological heart of America — by framing
the decision as an aberration, a radical act by a hopelessly liberal
federal circuit court. Bishop concludes journalists relegated Newdow
to a rhetorical "protest zone" — he was heard but from a safe distance
"As long people believe that the media represent antiestablishment
values, this book needs to read. As long as reporters mislead
themselves into believing that they are watchdogs and not lapdog the
establishment, this book needs to be read. As long as the media
continues to trivialize complex issues and marginalized people who
challenge us, this book need to be read. We need more books like this
one." -- Chris Lamb, author of d"Drawn to extremes, The use and
abuse of editorial cartoons."
Ronald Bishop is associate Professor in the Department of Culture and
Communication at Drexel University.

.. . . You can't understand a phrase such as "Congress shall make no law
respecting an establishment of religion" by syllogistic reasoning. Words
take their meaning from social as well as textual contexts, which is why "a
page of history is worth a volume of logic." New York Trust Co. v. Eisner,

"You pilot always into an unknown future;
facts are your only clue. Get the facts!"
That philosophy 'snipit' helped to get me, and my crew, through a good
many combat missions and far too many scary, inflight, emergencies.
It has also played a significant role in helping me to expose the
plethora of radical Christian propaganda and lies that we find at
almost every media turn.
