Object: Hire me because I'm a born again Christian
Had a weird experience lately. I decided to have the bathroom in my
house renovated so I called a few contractors and had them come over to
give me estimates. While talking about my project and they doing their
usual sales pitch on how they're reliable and so on, two of them
mentioned they're born again Christians.
I've had contractors over to my house before for other projects and
none of them ever said that. I guess these guys think that would make
a difference. Anyone else have this experience? I didn't mention to
them that I'm an atheist.
Anyway, I'm actually considering hiring one of them because of his
knowledge and references. If I do, maybe I should get a Satanic Bible
and leave it out where he'll see it on the last day of the project. :)

Really! Are these people so insecure that they have to constantly advertise
their beliefs? Or did they think that you'd be more likely to hire them
because of this?

You should only do that, after the job is finsihed,
and before you have made the last payment:)
really, you shouldn't do such a thing,
it's not honest,
unless you really believe in Satan:

I had to have the house painted last year, and after receiving payment,
one of them ran out to the truck and came back with a fundy pamphlet.
He just gave it to me without a word, no attempts at persuasion or
anything, so I didn't hold it against him, although I let him see me
fold it up as I shut the door.

Anyway, I'm actually considering hiring one of them because of his

I won't do that, but mainly to make a statement. Where I live there
is a hardware store, an auto shop, a commercial valve and pipe
manufacturer and a neon sign factory within five minutes of my house,
all of which post bible verses on their signs, two of which have bible
fish painted on permanently, and one of which has several verses from
Job as a permanent part of the sign. I will not, under any
circumstances, allow them to think I hired them because of their
religious posturing.
The roofers who fixed a leak for me this month repulsed me when I
swung by their office to pay with a credit card. In the lobby was a
poster in support of the Promise Keepers, so they lost my business as
both an atheist and a woman. I had gotten several quotes for that job,
and when I next need a roofer I'll just call the other company I liked
best.

If I do, maybe I should get a Satanic Bible

That would be needlessly disrespectful if all the contractor did was
mention his superstitious leaning. If he tried to proselytize at all,
then I'd say he's fair game for anything.

I have never had a contractor do this, but I have seen those

Since you seem to be asking our opinions I would definitely try
to avoid these born agains. The are trying to benefit from
discrimination
and atheists as well as less aggressive Christians will suffer if they
they succeed. On the other hand if this practice causes them
to lose business perhaps this discrimination will end.

Networking. They figure if you are also a BAC, then that gives them a
leg up.

In our area, there is even a Christian Yellow Pages called the
"Shepard's Guide" for religious people to advertise for other religious
people.

Whomever you hire, check with your area Better Business Bureau and if
possible make arrangements to actually see some of their finished work
before you sign the contract. I redid my bathrooms a couple of years
ago. Good luck and yes, you will live through it.

I think it's more of a badge of honesty that they think people actually
give a crap about. To them, "I'm a born again Christian" translates
into "I won't lie or cheat".
You should hire the fundy and leave a couple of gay porn magazines
around the work area...throw them for a bit of a loop. :-)

Don't hire the fundy. In every single instance that I have had bsuiness
dealing with a fundy I have regretted it. Evey single ne of them were
incompetent. Want an example? Dr. Chung.

In my experience, the more folks blab about how religious they are, the
more they will gouge you for their services, cheat you or stab you in the
back. Maybe it is an artifact of their inflated
self-esteem/self-righteousness. Give me a down-to-earth, hard-living
working man who wants to party rather than pray after work any day.

Fundies finally noticed how Jews have been networking and hiring each
other for a thousand years. Now many of them will only deal with businesses
within their own circle and endeavor to recruit others into those cartels.

You might wish to consider hiring people who don't base their lives on
childish folklore. If they screw up your project: "Oh well, it's god's
will." Also, any believer worth his salt carries no insurance.

I really don't care what they base their lives on as long as they do a
good job. If they screw up they can say it's god's will but they'll
also have to sue me for the money. As for insurance, they have no
choice since it's require by law in the state I live in. Yes I do

To me, in general, that's a warning bell of someone to stay away from.
If they have to advertise it then their trustworthiness becomes very
shaky.

I've had Christian Contractors work for me. One, who I found out later
was a fundy, was honest and did a fantastic job. Another christian
contractor did some lying and his work wasn't that good.
One older gent did some front end repair on my daughter's car. I knew
these folks were heavilly Christian, but they treated it as a private
matter. We mentioned putting things in writing and the gent was quite
[honestly] offended and indicated he didn't want to work with us. If my
word isn't good enough then I don't want to do business with you.
So we said, ok.
He said it would take him a day and a half to complete the work. He was
as good as his word. He did a great job on it and his only regret was
he couldn't locate a used grill assembly, so he wired in the closest he
could find fully expecting to find a proper one within a month.
You couldn't tell it wasn't the proper one or that it had been
temporarily wired into place.
