"His Dark Materials" coming to theaters in late 2006 or early 2007 |
First movie of the trilogy, "The Golden Compass", expected releast in
late 2006 or early 2007. It will be directed by Anand Tucker
("Shopgirl", "Hilary and Jackie") It is expected that three movies will
be made together (a la "The Lord of the Rings") to be released
consecutively a year apart. No casting decisions have been made from
what I could find out, but current rumor has Nicole Kidman as Mrs.
Coulter and Sean Connery as John Faa.
Given that the movie centers on "the church is bad" and one of the
climactic moments is the death of "The Authority" (aka God Almighty), it
will be *very* interesting to see how the movies are done and what will
be the reaction of the Talibangelicals <insert very evil grin here>

I really do prefer the title "Northern Lights" to Golden Compass.

The website says they might leave the God dying part out
http://www.hisdarkmaterials.org/content-37.html
although I suspect that in the end they won't, because
nothing sells like controversy.
I can't say I was crazy about the books, but this may
be one of those things that works better as a movie.
The website also notes that Tom Stoppard wrote the
original screenplay, but that it's currently being rewritten.
That doesn't necessarily bode well.

rumours say they will be trying to leave religion out and have it as a
fight against a general "authority figure"

Which misses the whole point of the novels, one might sadly note.

Alas that kind of thing is all too common. Apparently when Terry
Pratchett was approached with respect to filming Mort, it didn't take
too long for some, ah, Holywood exec to suggest :
"Hey, we've been doing market research in Power Cable, Nebraska, and
other centres of culture, and the Death/skeleton bit doesn't work for
us, it's a bit of a downer, we have a problem with it, so lose the
skeleton". (from AFP FAQ).
As Pratchett said: "It would be an insult to oysters to say they
(those who were going to do the Mort film) had the brains of a mollusc
- I'm hanging on until I find someone higher up the food chain".
