His One Mistake |
He always made it into the office,
He kept up with the news,
The doctors examined him twice a year,
He knew a few good jokes,
He ate lots of fresh fruit,
He played football on Sunday mornings,
He slept at least 8 hours every night,
He never smoked, drunk much or lost his temper,
He took healthy walks where there was clean air,
He kept himself clean,
He did his daily exercises,
He was all set to live to be a hundred,
The funeral will be held Thursday,
His One Mistake
HE FORGOT GOD - lived as if this world was all, and is now with those who
say, "The harvest is past, the summer is ended and we are not saved."
[Jeremiah 8:20]
Dear friend: are you making this mistake? It certainly isn't necessary. The
Bible says, "that if you confess with your mouth, the Lord Jesus and believe
in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved."
[Romans 10:9]
For what does it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his
own soul? [Mark 8:36]

It's not proselytizing. It's sheer stupidity. He knows we don't
believe what he does, so he stupidly and rudely presumes it when he
ribs his unsolicited ***** in our faces.
It would be proselytizing if he expected to convert anybody.

Soul originally being life, I wouldn't worry about that.We all die.
It's just that some of us leave a better world behind, and some don't.
Praising the Lord is no good, loving your fellow (wo)man is.
That - by the way - was Jesus's message,

As has been said many times, you gotta believe before you can believe...
That's why "they" have to get to you when you're young and vulnerable.
Kids believe what their parents and other adults tell them. Parents
believe the priests and reverends are capable of imparting important
moral lessons to their children. That's because the parents were
subjected to the same lessons when they were children.
One of the important moral lessons is the afterlife. Heaven is the reward
for living one's life according to the teachings, doctrines and dogma of
the church you attend.
In the church I attended, Hell isn't mentioned to youngsters in a serious
way 'til after they have been convinced that Heaven is a real place and
that death isn't the end of living. Reminds me of a zombie movie...
It's the older kids who're taught about Hell and the consequence of Sin.
Sin is always pronounced as if it was capitalized.
They really want to drive home the Sins which can land you in Hell, once
you reach a certain age.
The teachers and others in the church are convinced you believe in God
*before* they start preaching Fire and Brimstone. They are kind enough
not to frighten small children with these fables, but once a child is old
enough there is no more prohibition against using fear.
There's a not-so-subtle shift from using God's love as a lure, to using
God's wrath as a club.
First they give you a disease. Then they sell you a treatment. Not having
the disease is the worst fate of all...
I think, at some level, all religious folks realize the teachings are
false. The fear that's been instilled in them prevents a serious
examination of the teachings - 'cause questioning the teachings is the
Sin of Sins.
That's why so many of the pious hate atheists passionately. It isn't that
we're doing anything to earn their hatred, but rather that we, by
example, show them they do not require piety for fulfilling and fruitful
lives.
In my case, it's doubly bad, for I've had the teachings they've had, but
for one reason or another, they didn't "stick."
There's nothing the pious hate more than an atheist, but an atheist who
attended one of their churches in his youth? Back-slider and apostate are
the mildest epithets with which you're labeled. To a believer, such
labels are horrible.
They don't bother me as much as they used to :-)
"Atheists can't be trusted."
Actually, I'm quite trust-worthy. Even my mommy is impressed with my
honesty.
"Atheists deny the obvious."
No, I accept the obvious. There's not a shred of evidence, let alone
proof, that such things as gods exist outside the imagination.
"Faith is a virtue."
Then perhaps you should believe in all the gods, instead of just one. Get
back with me when you figure out why all but one of 'em are false.
"Atheists will burn in Hell."
And theists will rot in their graves just as long as I will. We'll all be
recycled. I think I'd like to be a plot of roses.
"God is not mocked."
Actually, I agree with this one. It's no fun mocking something that
doesn't exist. It's a great deal of fun to mock the believers, though.
"How did you lose your faith?"
I put it down somewhere, then forgot where I left it.
"Why do you hate God?"
I don't hate gods at all. I don't hate leprechauns either, or unicorns,
fairies, banshees, ghosts, goblins or grues. Since none of them are real,
hatred for them would be silly.
"You're a tool of Satan."
Ah, yes... The adversary, the deceiver. The loyal opposition. Since I
don't believe in your god, I don't believe in your anti-god either.
Binary thinking at it's most basic - God's fool or Satan's tool.
Think about this, if you dare: Satan is evil. God created Satan. God knew
Satan would be evil *before* he created him.
Which is the greater evil?
The believers think Satan gets their God off the hook when it comes to
evil...
Reading the Book shows Satan in a different light. How many folks did
Satan kill? Now, how many folks did God kill, and how many others did he
order his followers to kill?
I ask again, which one is the greater evil?
"How dare you presume to judge God Almighty Himself!"
The same way I'd judge any other mass-murdering, sociopathic monomaniac.
Fortunately for the world, He's just a character in a book. Unfortunately
for the world, many folks think the Book is The Truth.
If the world is reduced to a nuclear cinder, it'll be a religious
conflict that starts the burning.
Yeah, I'm kind of a pessimist...
This post inspired by "Hiscoming."
I figured I couldn't be any more sophomoric than he was.
