Former President Jimmy Carter
Almost always, when former President Jimmy Carter opens his big, smug
mouth, he has already made the psychological mistake that is going to
reduce his words to absurdity. When he told the press last week that
the Bush administration had aroused antipathy around the world, he
might have been uttering no more than a banality. But no, he had to
try to invest it with a special signature flourish. So, he said
instead:
I think as far as the adverse impact on the nation around the world,
this administration has been the worst in history. The overt reversal
of America's basic values as expressed by previous administrations,
including [those of] George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan and Richard
Nixon and others, has been the most disturbing to me.
Leave aside the sophomoric slackness that begins a broken-backed
sentence with the words "as far as" and then cannot complete itself.
"Worst in history," as the great statesman from Georgia has to know,
has been the title for which he has himself been actively contending
since 1976. I once had quite an argument with the late Sen. Eugene
McCarthy, who maintained adamantly that it had been right for him to
vote for Ronald Reagan in 1980 for no other reason. "Mr. Carter," he
said, "quite simply abdicated the whole responsibility of the
presidency while in office. He left the nation at the mercy of its
enemies at home and abroad. He was the worst president we ever had."

Carter's the worst president EVER. More responsible than any western
leader for the plague of Islamic
fundamentalism.

How, exactly, is he responsible for this, Dicklas? (Sounds of Dicklas
running away, shrieking in horror...)

I don't mean to defend Dicklas, and I certainly don't consider Carter
the worst president ever (Nixon, Reagan, and Dubya all have him beat
quite easily), but Carter does bear *some* responsibility for the rise
of fundamentalist Islam. First, by his support for the Shah of Iran,
which aroused ire against the US and created the situation in which
Islamo-fascists came to power.

That's a strange comment. It was the CIA coup of 1953 that brought the
Shah to power, overthrowing a democratic Iranian government headed by
Mosaddeq. The blame for that rests squarely with Eisenhower. The Iranian
ire you speak of had festered for 23 years before Carter became
president. Carter didn't help matters with his incompetence, but he
inherited the situation. Furthermore it is unfair to term the Shiite
Iranian clerics as Islamo-fascists. They are downright rational when
compared with the Wahabi Sunni fanatics responsible for 9/11 and other
atrocities.

Second, by his support for the jihadists in Afghanistan
who became the Taliban and al-Qaida.

The jihadists supported by Brzezenski and Carter in 1979 did not become
the Taliban or al Qaida. The Taliban, a lot of whom were in diapers in
1979, arose as a movement AGAINST the warlords/mujahadeen supported by
the US. The jihadists in Afghanistan did not become al Qaida; they are
quite different animals.

In many cases,
Reagan's worst policies simply followed Carter's, amplifying them but
remaining the same in kind.

Carter was a bad president, but I think it better to fault him for
crimes that happened under his watch, like aid to the genocidal
Indonesian government, military support of the death squad regime in
El Salvador even after the assassination of Archbishop Romero, etc. -
rather than for events that under 20/20 hindsight can be traced to minor
aid packages of 20 years prior.

That's a strange comment. It was the CIA coup of 1953 that brought the

Mosaddeq.

It wasn't a democratic government, and the CIA didn't overthrow it. That
is Soviet propaganda that has been circulated for sixty years now.
Mossadegh was a Soviet client - by the time of the coup, he had already
overridden the democratic constitution under which he had been elected,
much like the way Chavez has done in Venezuela in the last couple of
years.
Please update your files with this information and do not continue to
repeat old anti-American propaganda.

The blame for that rests squarely with Eisenhower. The
Iranian ire you speak of had festered for 23 years before Carter

The Iranian mullahs are fascists by any stretch of the imagination.

Second, by his support for the jihadists in Afghanistan

The jihadists supported by Brzezenski and Carter in 1979 did not

Qaida; they are quite different animals.

Once again, please update your files. The Taliban formed out of the
remnants of the mujahideen that were supported by the US against the
Russians. You are correct about al Qaeda - they were Saudi radicals who
aligned themselves with the Taliban as a matter of convenience when they
were kicked out of Saudi Arabia.

In many cases,
Reagan's worst policies simply followed Carter's, amplifying them but
remaining the same in kind.

You are either completely ignorant or lying through your teeth.
Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi surrendered power on January 16th, 1979 at
the urging of Prime Minister Shapour Bakhtiar. Bakhtiar dissolved
SAVAK, freed political prisoners, it was Bakhtiar who, all on his own,
allowed the Ayatollah Khomeini to return. Bakhtiar was hoping that
Khomeini would created a sort of Shi'a "Vatican" in Qom, Iran's
holiest city. At no time did Carter urge that Khomeini be given
control of the country. I challenge you to find a citation that backs
your claim.

Not long after that, the US embassy was
invaded, hostages taken and
you know the rest of the story.

If by "not long after" you mean nine months, then yes. The Shah had
been staying in friendly Islamic countries in North Africa, but asked
to enter the United States to seek medical treatment. Carter allowed
this on October 22nd, 1979. At this point, Khomeini had been in
complete countrol of Iran for seven months.
The US Embassy takeover took place on November 4th, 1979. Long after
the Shah had left and Khomeini was in charge.
These are facts, Kurt. If you don't agree, challenge me with proof.

So, Dolton, if I'm "shrieking" in horror it's because a US President

No, that would be the popular revolution in Iran that did that.

I'm guessing old Knickers doesn't idolize Hitchcup any more. Not
since he wrote "God is not Great"
Knickers willl never understand how turning his religion into just
another political party was a very bad move.

Enough to be worrisome, but far less than they thought they were

I see where Putsch has quietly signed a directive ( "National Security

the Courts should a localized catastrophe such as Katrina or an 8.0

I doubt this Supreme Court would overrule it.

Jimmy Carter is a better man, a better citizen and was a better
president than GWB will ever be.

He has certainly earned the right to have an opinion and
express it whenever he gets the urge. When he was
president, he swore to uphold the constitution. When he
retired, he didn't swear not to criticize any future presidents.
Come to think of it, the basis of democracy is that every
citizen has those rights. I don't understand why anyone who
believes in democracy would have any problem with his or any
other citizen's opinions being broadcast.

Almost always, when former President Jimmy Carter opens his big, smug
mouth,

Hitchens is sort of like Fred Phelps. He doesn't like anybody.

Except Hitchens is often right. Not in this situation, granted, but he
was certainly on target with Falwell.

Poor old alcoholic Hitchens, still trying to slime Jimmy Carter.

The right wing will find the next president's job easy to smear, too. Carter
had to clean up after wars of imperial aggression, with a severely weakened
military and a plundered economy. So, because he did not bomb Tehran flat,
Carter and not Nixon is accused of making our country more vulnerable.
Imagine if, only a few years after Vietnam, Carter had attempted a "regime
change" in Persia. We'd have the exact same crisis. At least Bush went in
with a strong army.
How long will it take to recover?
