Hitler Jungen Volk, Just a social club? |
I've been reading this NG awhile now...
The righties are saying that joining the Nazi youth groups was not
optional, you did it or died. I have never read that before. Does
anyone have the facts? To those who haven't heard the new pope was a
Hitler
youth, allegedly against his will, was incarcerated in an American POW
camp in 1944.

I once heard (I think on a TV programme) that the attitude of the Nazis
towards membership of the Hitler Youth was a kind of compromise between the
totalitarian and the pragmatic: membership was 'compulsory, but not
enforced'. In other words, you were told you had to join; but if you really
didn't want to join, then they left you alone because they knew you'd be no
bloody use anyway.
Therefore Pope Nazinger joined the Hitler Youth *voluntarily*: he could have
refused, but he didn't. So either he was an amoral *****, or a yellow
*****, or an amoral yellow *****.

How old was he when he made this decision? I think he might have been too
young to really be held responsible for it, and it was so many years ago
and in a vastly different world. I really don't think this is a "sin"
worth remembering at this point.
Judging people on their actions completely devoid of context doesn't
really serve anybody, and joining what amounted to a social club for
young boys isn't really worth getting worked up about this many years
later.

Everybody had a choice. What choice they made depended on how much
moral backbone they had. Being religious is not about having any,
indeed, very often it is about not having any. After all, taking the
trouble to personally understand the difference between right and wrong
was the original sin.

To some Germans, the Hitler Youth was a lot like the Boy Scouts:
hiking, camping, nude swimming, crafts, pseudomilitary uniforms,
avoiding the company of girls, religion, nationalism, and encouraged
conformity.

allegedly against his will, was incarcerated in an American POW
camp in 1944.

Membership of the HJ was VOLUNTARY. Nobody forced anyone to join or
not join. But ... if you wanted a career in Gross Deutschland, you
really wanted to put HJ on your resume. It certainly helped.
Of course, that HJ on your resume wasn't exactly beneficial after
05-05-1945. So, some people invented this join or else myth. They had
a career to further, you know.
So, what does that say about the Panzer Pope?
Something like an ambitious ***** who doesn't give or care worth
damn?
