Homosexuality in Victorian England |
Ok, I went and saw the play Gross Indecency, The three trials of Oscar
Wilde. I could not hear what the actor's were saying, so I went to the
library and checked out the play.
If I understood correctly, homosexuality was not a word or a concept
in Victorian England. Oscar Wilde did not consider himself to be a
homosexual, because they did not exist. Oscar Wilde had a wife and two
children.
Victorian society thought that all people were heterosexual and were
extremely shocked when they caught two "heterosexual" men having sex.
Am I even close?

"particular" friendship?

Wilde described it as a higher level of love and cited the Greek
philosophers.
I tried to reread Plato's republic and put it down when they were
trying to decide who's little boyfriend was the cutest.
As Sir Douglas stated all of the older boys at Oxford do it to all of
the younger boys.

I have always understood that the Victorians knew just about
everything there was to know about sex in it's various forms.
I haven't seen this but it might be interesting.

I do have a video copy of a one man play called "Oscar" I believe
which was shown on A&E fifteen years or so ago.
I haven't watched it in quite a while but can dig it out and give you
the info on it if you like.
<It isn't listed on their website>
It's intensly interesting with the character being Douglas, his
alleged lover if I recall correctly.
It's very moving really.
