Montreal Homosexual OutGames Bankrupt

MONTREAL, December 11, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The First World
Outgames, not to be confused with the Gay Games, is likely to be the
last. The homosexual sporting event, held in Montreal this past summer
and paid for with generous donations of funds from taxpayers, is
bankrupt.
The games organization faces a $2.09-million debt after first
predicting a 200,000 surplus. Altogether, the games lost over $5
million.
According to the French-language TV channel LCN, the event's
organizing committee is under bankruptcy protection. The committee has
thirty days to try to satisfy its creditors, including the celebrity
spokesmen who touted the event in the press.
Retired tennis star and gay-athlete icon Martina Navratilova is
reportedly still owed half the $39,384.32. Olympic swimming champion
Mark Tewksbury who lent his name for the publicity is owed $1,055 and
Cirque du Soleil is waiting for $48,209.30.
The games, whose motto was "social change through sport", took
place from July 26, 2006 to August 5, and was supported in part by a $3
million donation from the Province of Quebec.
The Montreal Gazette reports that many suppliers for the games were
left unpaid when the government refused to step in to pay the bills.
The Outgames recorded a deficit estimated to be $5.3 million. The
Gazette reported that as of the middle of November, the website of the
World Outgames had been shut down and voicemail was answering the
phone.
In addition to the province of Quebec, the games' sponsors included
the city of Montreal, the Government of Canada, pharmaceutical giant,
GlaxoSmithKline, Air Canada, Labatt Brewing Company, and Bell Canada.
The games were open to anyone who applied to participate with no
qualifying requirements for competing and were held in connection with
an international conference on homosexual political activism.

Untrue. What a shallow "analysis". Even a cursory THOUGHT of what the
event represents in terms of incoming tourist dollars would reveal that
this event was a boon to the local economy.
While these games - the FIRST Outgames ever - did lose money, and money
is owed to suppliers, there are many people who benefited, and the
government's sponsorship surely paid off. (Indeed, Copenhagen will be
hosting Outgames in 2009.)
It is unfortunate that many suppliers have yet to be paid, but that
does not mean that "the people" (your term) did not reap benefits as a
whole.
I do want to emphasize that these were the first Outgames ever. Their
deficit is the result of lower-than-anticipated attendance. I've got
to say that I was not even aware of these games, which would indicate a
problem in promotion of the event. (This bad publicity, ironically, is
what brought the games to my attention!)
There were over 10,200 athletes involved. That doesn't include the
non-athletes who also attended. There were an additional 1,500
participants in a GLBT conference going on at the same time. There
were about 5,200 volunteers (many, likely, from Montreal itself, so I
wouldn't include the majority to be included in revenues realized from
hosting the events).
That represents a LOT of hotel rooms, airline tickets (and tax/fee
revenues to the airports), event ticket sales (a loss for the event,
but if they were taxed, additional revenue for the government),
restaurant meals (and taxes and tips), taxis, car rentals, and other
tourist dollars being pumped into the economy, immediately, and those
who had a positive experience in the city may well go back later to
spend even more.
This would represent a SUCCESS for the government. Bringing in tourist
dollars is always a benefit to the economy.
Demonstrated losses warrant ceasing the waste agenda.
This certainly is not the first event in history to lose money! Here
in Fort Lauderdale there was recently discussion about our Air & Sea
Show being discontinued. But when the incoming revenues were reviewed,
it was decided that the event would continue.
From an article describing that some suppliers hadn't been paid:
"They'd heard rumours of large sports events in other cities that
never paid their suppliers, but they quickly brushed off their
worries." They're not talking about Outgames (cuz this was the very
first one) or the Gay Games here, but your mainstream sporting events.

Somehow, you exhibit no furor over games that would have been
designated "hetero". No desire to research the economics of THOSE

The government saw a return on its sponsorship. Sponsoring
corporations did as well. And so did local tourist businesses.
