House bill: English only for Pledge, Nat'l Anthem |
The shame is that a law should *have to* be passed instead of just
respectfully observed. Those who choose to not learn our language should
stay out!!

Resolution result of recent recording of 'Star Spangled Banner' in
Spanish
A new resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives calls for the
recitation and singing of the Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem and new
citizens' oaths in English only.
Cosponsored by Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., and Rep. Jim Ryun, R-Kan., the
legislation would be advisory and not enforceable by law. Even so, the
congressmen believe it is needed in the wake of a new Spanish version of
"The Star Spangled Banner" recently recorded by Latino stars Carlos Ponce,
Gloria Trevi and others.
New York Newsday reported the resolution proposes that the House
"affirms that statements or songs that symbolize the unity of the Nation ...
should be recited or sung in English, the common language of the United
States."
"Throughout our history, the English language has been the glue that
binds us together as Americans," King said in a statement. "It is only
proper that the National Anthem be sung in our common language, English."
King says he believes most Americans opposed the mass illegal-alien
rallies that occurred Monday.
"My phone was ringing off the hook . and 99 percent of the callers
were against the demonstrators," King told the New York paper.
"I think the rank and file are turned off by illegal immigrants
demanding rights."
In November, King sponsored a bill to make English the official
language of the United States.
Last week, President Bush said he thinks the National Anthem should be
sung only in English. Even so, the Drudge Report points out author Kevin
Phillips, in his book "American Dynasty," claims Bush sang the anthem in
Spanish while campaigning for president.
"When visiting cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, or Philadelphia, in
pivotal states, George W. Bush would drop in at Hispanic festivals and
parties, sometimes joining in singing 'The Star-Spangled Banner' in Spanish,
sometimes partying with a 'Viva Bush' mariachi band flown in from Texas,"
wrote Phillips.

From the article:

In other words, yet another waste of time on the public payroll,
courtesy of Republican members of the house.

It's mildly refreshing that the G.O.P. doesn't even *pretend* to stand
for fiscal responsibility or small government any more.
Next up from King and Ryun will be "advisory" legislation requiring that
all skirts (yes, kilts included) reach below the knee, and that signs in
Chinatowns all over the country that are written in Chinese be taken
down and replaced with English language ones. All in the name of
keeping the constituents from being made improperly horny or confused.

Singing the damn thing in Spanish (as if most people can manage it in
any language because it is nearly unsingable) is the least of their
problems.

How is singing a song in another language going to hurt anyone? Are
you really that much of a terrified xenophobe, J Young?

It doesn't, but what it represents is bad for the country. Try not to
cry.

He can't be too xenophobic since he's not an illegal alien ;)

REP. KING REVEALS A 'BUNKER' MENTALITY
By GEOFF EARLE Post Correspondent
April 24, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - Long Island Rep. Peter King - who holds a
powerful homeland-security post in Congress - wants the feds to build a
multimillion-dollar homeland-security center in his own back yard, The Post has
learned.
King asked a congressional appropriations panel to earmark $10 million for the
center, to be located in Nassau County buildings owned by the Navy.
The cost approaches the $13 million that the Giuliani administration spent to
build a state-of-the-art, bulletproof command center at 7 World Trade Center
that critics derided as a "bunker."
New York Newsday reported the resolution proposes that the House

Yes! And Spanish was spoken in Florida since 1565 when St. Augustine
was founded. Let's see... that is 441 years of Spanish in Florida. Also
Spanish was spoken in California, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada
before English was spoken there.

This is such bull. Where were all these people when Bush was running
for president?
http://thinkprogress.org/2006/05/02/bush-sing-spanish/
"When visiting cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, or Philadelphia, in
pivotal states, he would drop in at Hispanic
festivals and parties, sometimes joining in singing "The
Star-Spangled Banner" in Spanish, sometimes partying with a "Viva
Bush" mariachi band flown in from Texas."
Why arent't they attacking the Bush-run State Department?
http://www.reason.com/links/links050806.shtml
"It quickly emerged that there were four Spanish translations of the
anthem on the U.S. State Department's website, and that the government
had published a Spanish version of the song as early as 1919. The
lyrics have also been translated into German (way back in 1861),
French, Yiddish, and several other languages."
The last time Jeb Bush ran for governor, his TV ads included people
waving the Mexican flag....
