Compare the viewpoints (reportedly, fairly representative of the
replies) of UK citizens to that of your own locallity.
The award for utter twatishness goes to "Jon, England" for the
following nugget of pure <irony>genius</irony>:-
"I think one of the best ideas is to reintroduce religion to schools,
at as young an age as possible. If children are better educated in
Christianity, they can be brought up to respect it even if they don't
believe in it. How many people these days have actually read the
Bible? Naturally minority groups should be presented the option to
miss out on this, but essentially it should be compulsory."
Ho hum.

Boy, I've never seen an issue so divisive. It's like a civil war,
isn't it? Even amongst my friends, who are all very intelligent
people, they are totally divided on abortion. Some of my friends, for
instance, think these pro-life people are annoying idiots. Others of
my friends think these pro-life people are evil fucks.
How are we going to come to a consensus?
You want to hear the arguments around my house.
"They're annoying!"
"They're idiots!"
"They're evil!"
"They're fucks!"
Brothers, sisters come together! Can't we once just join hands and
think of them as evil annoying idiot fucks?

I think one of the best ideas is to reintroduce religion to schools,
at as young an age as possible. If children are better educated in
Christianity, they can be brought up to respect it even if they don't
believe in it. How many people these days have actually read the
Bible?

Very few have actually read the Bible. Which in my somewhat cynical opinion is
why they are still Christians. Asimov had it right, reading the Bible is a
powerful argument for atheism. Careful what you wish for fundies, the last
thing you want is for people to read the Bible.

I like:
" Free booze. It works everywhere. (They invented the idea themselves
and then they changed the ceremony so that only the priest gets the
wine. No wonder we feel cheated.)"
If they provide free drinks, maybe I'll show up for happy hour. I'll
wear my "I'm just here for the beer" T-shirt. :-)

Compulsory voluntary education, huh?
Can we say "oxymoron" or, in this case, just "moron" for short?

Just like "'spontaneous' planned prayer" at sporting events.

The fundy view.
When I left the UK in 1989 the few fundies there were an out of touch
joke. Every so often a senior church figure would show everybody what
an idiot he was, by talking about people "returning to the church" but
there were so many never-been-churched who had nothing to return to.
Most of the sensible ones knew this and while they lamented the
falling number of believers, they softened their stance instead of
alienating people. They knew that phrases like "need God in their
lives" were no different than "need Santa Claus in their lives" to a
large number of their audience.
There is a long tradition of "characters". Eccentrics. It's part of
what makes life interesting. But Britain does not (generically)
respect idiots and their idiocy "because it's their religious belief"
as they do in the US. They tend to regard somebody's religion as their
own business, as long as they keep it among themselves. But when they
cross the line they will treat them as idiots.
You only have to look at how the scientists and moderate churchmen
treated Ken Ham in a BBC TV discussion after the Gateshead creationism
scandal. He said some pretty stupid things and was treated like an
idiot for it.
You would not have got that on US television.
There seem to be more fundies now than there used to be. I don't know
why.
But the loony who signed himself "Jon, England" is worse than any I
ever met outside the US. Most have got more sense. It's attitudes like
his that cause active disrespect for _other_ religions. And for people
to disrespect him and his religion.

Ho hum.
