Just as they claim to be conservative and are anything but, they claim
to be 'Christian' to the horror of many if not most moderate churches.
Even some of the evangelicals are starting to speak out against his
policies. I think it's time for a backlash.

I tried optimism myself, once, but I didn't like it very much.

one piece of advice that's actually useful:
Give up hope. Without hope there can be no disappointment.

I'm not as pessimistic. I've lived long enough to see that politics is a
pendulum and it swings both ways. I recall the ultraconservative '50s
with McCarthyism, the Cold War, "Better dead than Red": and all that.
Then the pendulum swung to the left in the '60s and '70's, some might
say too far. There was a reaction and it swung to the right again in the
'80s and '90s. Perhaps it has reached its maximum and will start to
swing back the other way.

What caused the Soviet Union to collapse?
Go on, try to answer.
Then look what Bush has done to us.
The GOP likes to claim that they bankrupted the Soviet
Union with Reagan's spending. Well, every last dime
from Reagan's deficits is still there, still collecting
interest, and then Bush seniors half-a-trillion bailout
of the Savings & Loan scandal (to save his youngest
son's neck) was never counted as part of the debt.
Dubya has easily topped Reagan with his deficits.
Another factor often cited in the collapse of the
Soviet Union was their war in Afghanistan.
We're fighting that exact same war, even as we
are fighting another war in Iraq.
Financially we're in far worse shape than the old
Soviet Union, and militarily we're far more
stretched out then they were.
You think it was an accident? You think Bush
meant to preserve Clinton's budget surpluses
only he accidentally slipped and created the
largest deficits in the history of the planet?
You think Bush sneezed and accidentally invaded
a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, and
didn't threaten us in any way?

I agree with everything you've said. Some of us aren't as fatalistic as
you about it.

Fair enough. I often describe myself as, "Not an optimist,

Past time. But, at least, it is finally starting. The whole
Schiavo circus finally got a lot of people thinking.
