I am delighted to inform you that a good friend got back from Iraq last
week (safe and well) and it was damned good to see him. Moreover he
was deployed in a fairly calm Shia region of southwestern Iraq and was
hardly involved in unpleasantness let along combat. But he was damn
lucky to have had his tour so easy. Of course the idiots could
redeploy him just about any time and get him killed.
Do you care one way or the other?

The weakest part of the Baker report is the idea that we talk to Iran
and Syria. Our sticks are not so big since we are bogged down in Iraq.
Our carrots are completely unacceptable. The only offer to Iran good
enough for them to consider helping us would be to stop interfering
with their uranium enrichment (which would be insane). Syria would
immediately demand as a precondition that we stop interferring with
their putzing around in Lebanon which would lead to more chaos with
Israel. I could consider the option of sending more forces but only if
we were going to do it properly with overwhelming force (i.e. hundreds
of thousands more rather than tens of thousands). But where would the
troops be gotten?
So what's your master plan for what we should do?

a different branch of military service? :-\
How the U.S. Congress ends the Iraqi occupation is irrelevant,
but, as more and more U.S. soldiers are harmed, the U.S. congress(persons)
will have more to fear than foreign terrorists IED's :-(
