People *like* simple answers to complex problems. That is, in essence,
what religion sells. People also like leaders who can convincingly lie to
them that the simple answers are correct. However, as Mencken
observed, "For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear,
simple, and wrong." And Einstein: "Everything should be made as simple as
possible, but not simpler."

How smart is this:
1) Fight terrorism by start a war with a relatively defenseless Middle
East country when your VP just happens to have been CEO of a major defense
contractor. When an adviser points out that this will only incite more
terrorism, replace him with someone who will tell you what you want to
hear.
2) Achieve energy independence by letting the price of oil skyrocket,
while you have an Energy policy that was written by the oil company
executives, and no serious commitment to developing alternatives.
Coincidentally, oil company profits are breaking all previous records.
The war in Iraq, which was to have paid for itself in oil revenue, is
costing hundreds of billions of dollars. The only ones profiting are the
oil companies. Oh yea, I almost forgot: the President has close ties to
the oil industry, having been an "oil man" himself.
3) Help the poor by shifting the cost of government onto the middle class,
ensuring that the gap between rich and poor-middle class gets wider than
it has ever been in the past. Whatever costs the middle class can't
cover, pass on to future generations for their middle class to deal with.
4) Heal the sick by letting the pharmaceutical industry write the Medicare
Prescription Drug benefit program. Specifically outlaw allowing Medicare
to negotiate for lower drug prices. Let the price of drugs skyrocket,
while the Pharmaceutical company profits are breaking all previous
records. Make a lame attempt to control costs by putting more of the cost
on the patient, and cutting reimbursements to providers. Do nothing to
reform the insurance industry, or the legal environment.
5) Wonder why nobody with an IQ in the positive numbers trusts the current
administration to do anything but find new and creative ways to rape the
economy, the environment, the lowest 99% income bracket, our allies across
the world, etc, etc.

records. The war in Iraq, which was to have paid for itself in oil
revenue, is costing hundreds of billions of dollars. The only ones
profiting are the oil companies. Oh yea, I almost forgot: the
President has close ties to the oil industry, having been an "oil
man" himself.
Oh, dear, profits, how EEEEEVUL!
3) Help the poor by shifting the cost of government onto the middle
class, ensuring that the gap between rich and poor-middle class
gets wider than it has ever been in the past. Whatever costs the
middle class can't cover, pass on to future generations for their
middle class to deal with.
As opposed to the Democrats, who would shift the burden to "the rich"
in order to make them all middle class again.
4) Heal the sick by letting the pharmaceutical industry write the
Medicare Prescription Drug benefit program. Specifically outlaw
allowing Medicare to negotiate for lower drug prices. Let the
price of drugs skyrocket, while the Pharmaceutical company profits
are breaking all previous records.
Oooh, there's those eeeevul profits again! Damn those drug companies
for being successful!
Make a lame attempt to control costs
by putting more of the cost on the patient, and cutting
reimbursements to providers. Do nothing to reform the insurance
industry, or the legal environment.
5) Wonder why nobody with an IQ in the positive numbers trusts the
current administration to do anything but find new and creative
ways to rape the economy, the environment, the lowest 99% income
bracket, our allies across the world, etc, etc.
Quoted for truth.

But I don't, G-Ride. You do. You treat him like he's the anti-Christ, or

While I've never seen Fred treat Bush as a god, he does excuse all of
his incredible moronic moves and doesn't seem to think he should be
held to any responsibility, as do most of the neo con radio whack
jobs, what I do find interesting is that he and they all seem to feel
the current candidates, who while obviously useless too, exhibit a few
more brains than Bush ever did, now seem to find them abhorrent and
not conservative, when Bush, who they all excused left and right, has
also been acting in ways that they 'say' are liberal.
Not exactly conducive to any logic there, but hey, if Fred wants to
give it a try.

Profits are not evil; profiteering is.
I saw a clip on a financial news show recently. They were interviewing
the CEO of Lamborghini. He was remarking how their market was not slowing
down, as other car makers are seeing. It was a pretty clear indication
that the segment of society that can afford Lamborghinis is doing just
fine; it's the lower 99% that's suffering.
By any measure, the gap between the rich and poor is getting wider. It is
my personal, philosophical belief that one of the jobs of government is to
prevent that from happening. People and companies should not be punished
for being successful, but the richer they get, the harder it should be for
them to get richer still. I realize that is a pipe dream: the more rich
and powerful, the more the government will bend over for you. Politicians
and influence are commodities, just like anything else. What bothers me
is that the Republicans are just so fucking *blatant* about it.

The "lower 99%" aren't suffering either. For pete's sakes, we've got it
better now than we ever had it. The biggest problem in the American
economy is a result of the government making it *TOO EASY* for people to
get in over their heads when they bought expensive houses.
By any measure, the gap between the rich and poor is getting wider.
So what? The "poor" are getting richer too. The United States is a
country where somebody who is "poor" has a car, TWO televisions, a
computer with an internet connection, air conditioning, and their primary
medical problem is obesity.
It is my personal, philosophical belief that one of the jobs of
government is to prevent that from happening.
It is my personal philosophical belief that the government has absolutely

Yeah. Just because the only other time within any of our
lives when we've seen stagflation it was caused by oil
prices, there's no reason to doubt the official excuse.
Nobody in any bank, investment firm or government body
ever suspected for one moment that the people on the
bottom couldn't afford a 50 to 100% increase in their
MONTHLY mortgage payment.
Seriously, they all thought that, by definition, the poor are
swimming in excess cash. Apparently they weren't.

To be fair, you're asking a Republican to admit failure. That's akin to
asking a cat to bark or a pig to sing. Remember, "The Buck Stops Here"
was the motto of a Democratic president. The Republicans took it literally
and have been blaming Democrats ever since.
