Scientists create mice with brains that are 0.1% human

SAN FRANCISCO-Add another creation to the strange scientific menagerie where
animal species are being mixed together in ever more exotic combinations.
Led by Fred Gage of the Salk Institute in San Diego, the researchers created
the mice by injecting about 100,000 human embryonic stem cells per mouse
into the brains of 14-day-old rodent fetuses.
Those mice were each born with about 0.1 per cent human cells in each of
their heads, a trace amount that does not remotely come close to
"humanizing" the rodents.
"This illustrates that injecting human stem cells into mouse brains doesn't
restructure the brain," Gage said. But the work adds to growing ethical
concerns about mixing human and animal cells to do stem-cell and cloning
research. Mice are already 97.5 per cent genetically identical to humans.
"If you humanize them too much, you cross certain boundaries," said David
Magnus, director of the Stanford Medical Center for Biomedical Ethics. "But
I don't think this research comes even close to that."

IN the old days, I used to hear conservatives smugly say that a
conservative is a liberal who's been mugged.
But then several years later, I heard a smart liberal ay that a liberal
is a conservative who's been arrested.

One way to "make a liberal" is to convince him/her to follow Jesus Christ,

Scientists Find "Race Gene"
Scientists in a study at Penn State University have discovered a
genetic mutation that they say largely explains the emergence of white
skin in humans thousands of years ago.
They emphatically stated that skin color is but a part of what race is,
citing biological, social and political concepts that also come into
play.
But because the issue of skin color cannot be excluded from theories
involving natural selection, some are asking whether white is the skin
type that has over the millenia been "selected" out as the preferred
hue in the human community. They point to other "racial traits," such
as slant eyes and broad noses, that typify other than white-skinned
people.
I dunno.
