High school student sues Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (AP) -- A Florida high school student is suing
the state over a law that requires students to stand during the
Pledge of Allegiance, and that he shouldn't have to get his parents'
permission if he doesn't want to recite it.
A lawsuit filed on behalf of Cameron Frazier of Palm Beach County
argues the state law is unconstitutional because it violates his
First and Fourteenth Amendments.
The law is cited in the Florida School Laws handbook. It requires
students to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance and if they don't
want to recite the words, they must have their parents' written permission.
Frazier's lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The ACLU cites a 1943 US Supreme Court ruling that says members
of a religious group can't be forced to say the pledge in public schools.
The lawsuit also says Frazier should be allowed to remain seated
quietly during the pledge.
