New Orleans Residents: God's Mercy Evident in Katrina's Wake
By Jody Brown and Allie Martin
September 2, 2005
[...]
Rev. Bill Shanks, pastor of New Covenant Fellowship of New
Orleans, also sees God's mercy in the aftermath of Katrina --
but in a different way. Shanks says the hurricane has wiped out
much of the rampant sin common to the city.
The pastor explains that for years he has warned people that
unless Christians in New Orleans took a strong stand against
such things as local abortion clinics, the yearly Mardi Gras
celebrations, and the annual event known as "Southern
Decadence" -- an annual six-day "gay pride" event scheduled to
be hosted by the city this week -- God's judgment would be felt.
"New Orleans now is abortion free. New Orleans now is Mardi Gras
free. New Orleans now is free of Southern Decadence and the
sodomites, the witchcraft workers, false religion -- it's free
of all of those things now," Shanks says. "God simply, I
believe, in His mercy purged all of that stuff out of there --
and now we're going to start over again."
The New Orleans pastor is adamant. Christians, he says, need to
confront sin. "It's time for us to stand up against wickedness
so that God won't have to deal with that wickedness," he says.
Believers, he says, are God's "authorized representatives on the
face of the Earth" and should say they "don't want unrighteous
men in office," for example. In addition, he says Christians
should not hesitate to voice their opinions about such things as
abortion, prayer, and homosexual marriage. "We don't want a
Supreme Court that is going to say it's all right to kill little
boys and girls, ... it's all right to take prayer out of
schools, and it's all right to legalize sodomy, opening the door
for same-sex marriage and all of that."
Shanks heeded warnings to evacuate New Orleans, and is currently
staying with friends in the Jackson, Mississippi, area.

Come to think of it, wasn't God going to spare Sodom and/or Gomorah if just
a few upright people could be found?
Why not extend the same courtesy to New Orleans? Why make the good people
suffer?

Here's another question: Why is God so intend on harming "bad" people,
when Jesus himself used to hang out with them?

Oh mighty Arkleseizure, thou gazed from high above.
And sneezed from out thy nostrils, a gift of bounteous love.
The universe around us emerged from thy nose.
Now we await with eager expectation, thy handkerchief,

I have two questions
1. If Bush is God's president why did he do this an 9/11 on his watch?
Couldn't he have waited for a Democrat?
2. If God did this to rid the city of sin why did he miss our Evil friend
Marc?

Maybe God figured the hurricane warnings should've been a good hint?

Because people with hardly a dollar to their name should be expected
to abandon what little they own and become totally homeless and
destitute. Not to mention that, seeing as how the evacuation was
bungled, most of these people didn't even have a chance to leave.

Yeah. It's really hard to survive the aftemath of a hurricane without some
jewelry, a DVD player and a new plasma screen TV. I think it should go one
step further than martial law. Shoot looters on sight. We don't need
people with that kind of mentality. That goes for looters of diapers, too.
In a situation like that, what the ***** good is a diaper going to do? Just
let the baby ***** in the lake of diarrhea that's already flowing through
the streets.

Yeah, and I'm tired of the grandstanding, too. There are people who were
crying the first day. That, I can understand. But as days have worn on,
the videos of people crying are just so fake it makes me sick. They're
making all the crying noises, but the expression isn't even on their face,
much less their eyes. They're worse than B-movie actors.

In this day and age, few people have walked far enough or actually learned
enough geography to understand the real size of the world and how long it
would take to walk from New Orleans to Baton Rouge, for example.

Anyone who could actually walk for four days straight, anyway. So
even assuming that they were willing to leave behind their homes and
everything that they owned, where would they have went? With nothing
but what little food and water they could carry (and maybe a few
dollars), they would've had to find a homeless shelter or something of
that nature since neither FEMA nor anyone else had had anything set up
at that point. Many of these people who didn't evacuate had never
left New Orleans in their lives; how the hell were they supposed to
know where to go?

Well, if they were so stupid they couldn't figure out that the best
direction to go would be north, then they should have died, too. Being
homeless on damp grass is better than being homeless in a city-sized septic

Figure a leisurely walking pace is about 3.5 miles per hour. If they had
36 hours notice, they could get up and walk out the door right then. Figure
walking about sixteen hours, rest at night, then walk some more. They could
have made it 98 miles inland in 28 hours of walking. Sure, they might have
sore feet and they'd be wet, but they'd be better off with sore feet than
infections from all the little nasties floating around in the water down
there after the storm.
Besides, many of the able-bodied only stayed to guard their possessions, or
