Object: I FAKED being a Christian this week.
I have an in law who is moving into this area at the end of the year.
She's lived overseas for 20 years, and my wife and I just bought a
house for her (her money, our power of attorney)... anyway, we're
trying to furnish it while on a tight budget.
This week we stopped into a second-hand furniture place... it was nice
enough, a huge selection, some good quality, not so bad prices....
BUT..
But they were listening to the local Christian channel (barf) and,
upon further investigation, had a photo of Jesus on the wall... you
know the one... White guy, Beard, drug-induced smile, "god-light'
creating a halo around his long hair...
Anyway, we found some nice furniture, and for a good price... we ended
up getting a total of about 10 pieces (dinning room/living room)....
THEN, our negotiations began.... The owner went down 10% cuz we were
buying a lot.. nice of him, but it got me thinkin'... what's the
special, secret-handshake price for Christians... so I started
explaining this furniture was for our Christian Sister (actually
Atheist / Buddhist) who had spent 20 years ministering in Korea
(actually, working as well as a Male to Female transexual).
I asked if there was anyway they could help out a Christian trying to
help out another Christian......
BAM, a total of 30% off instead of the 10%.
This Christian thing ROCKS!!!! I might have to put a jesus-fish on my
car for better parking places...

The furniture store owner pays taxes just like you do. There was nothing in
Rainlover's post that said it was a non-profit organization of any sort.
And as for 'what's wrong with [you] getting a break from the superstitious?"
Nothing, I guess, if you want to confirm every opinion that theists have of
atheists as being amoral and unethical. What's wrong is...it's dishonest.
Of course, if that doesn't bother you, then fine. Just don't try telling ME
again about how much better off the world would be if religion would simply
disappear and everybody ceased believing in deity, because I don't see an
advantage, here.

Hey, I agree. What sticks in my craw is the lying involved. I thought we
were better than that.
However, on the flipside, but the store keeper did was illegal in offering a
discount to a customer based on their religion. Too bad he didn't offer the
same discount to an undercover cop.

He offered the discount to a specific person who he admired and wanted to do
a favor for as a result of her perceived service. This is NOT illegal. It's
called 'charity', and is quite, quite legal and rather admired.

I agree. Though it irks me to know that people in some "club" may

this case was an example of charity taken advantage of.

Does it matter?
There are a great many 'what if's',and possibilities and "coulda's"...but
the thing is, he was that charitable to someone he thought needed help, that
he could provide. So he provided it.
You can't excuse Rainlover's dishonest actions because of some imagined
scenario of what the storeowner MIGHT have done had Rainlover been truthful.
The point is, he wasn't truthful.
So we will never know whether the store owner would have been as generous,
will we? All we know now is that Rainlover is a liar.

that you can accuse me of something....So here is the question you asked,
reinserted: "If he knew the "poor relative" was a tranny would he have been

The answer, of course, is, we don't know. Or, to quote myself, "...we will

Good grief, Steve, the store owner didn't CARE about Rainlover's religion.
The religion part came up AFTER he had already received the 'good price' and
the discount. The further reduction in price came after RAINLOVER brought up
the religion and took advantage of the store owner.
Talk about upside down ethics....
Y'know, I've been posting to this group for awhile now. I have put up with
insults beyond belief because I enjoyed the debates. I honestly thought that
atheists, at least those who were posting here and whom I knew, had some
ethical and moral background, that they honestly believed that there was an
advantage in human existence to not believing in a deity. However, if this
is what life without religion is going to be, I don't see an improvement.
Indeed, it's anything but.
Here you all are, excusing the gleeful dishonesty of a man who took
advantage of another; his ethics are non-existent. And you are attempting to
excuse it with 'well, if the store owner had known that we were atheists he
would have.....' when you KNOW that this is a crock of bull hockey. For one
thing, the store owner did NOT take advantage of Rainlover, before Rainlover
started lying, did he? Thus, there is no reason to believe that the price
would have gone up.
C'mon, Rainlover behaved in an atrocious and dishonest manner. THAT does not
reflect on atheism or on atheists...it only reflects on him. What does
reflect on atheism and atheists is your defense of him because of some
possible slight that MIGHT have happened IF the store owner knew that he was
atheist, a situation that is obviously a self serving lie....since the store
owner had no idea whether Rainlover was religious or not before Rainlover
himself started lying through his whiskers, and STILL gave him a 'good
price' and a discount.
So stop it. Just stop it. There isn't any excuse for what Rain lover did.
and the only reason was his greed and his bigotry. HIS bigotry, not that of
the store owner.

You are the one who lied, Rainlover. You are the one who took blatant
advantage of the store owner, by spinning a tale about your poor missionary.
He wasn't giving you a discount because you were a Christian. He gave you
that discount because you lied to him about a specific person who needed
special help, which the store owner gave.
And that is atrocious. And dishonest.
......and I have to tell you this; I don't like going into businesses that
advertise the religious opinions as blatantly as this guy evidently did,
either. For one thing, those that do would, if they knew what MY religious
preferences were, either kick me out of the store or attempt to engage me in
conversation. So...I prefer not to go in them. I don't do business with
people who put fish and crosses on their cards, either, and will not do
business with someone who includes religious icons in their advertising
anywhere...unless it's a religious book store.
That said, I don't lie to them, either. Because if I did, I would be proving
that they were A: more moral than me, B: more tolerant than me, and C:
correct in any negative perception they might have of me and the belief
system I represent.
The idea, Rainlover, is that if you figure that your ethical system is
better than Christianity, then you really should BEHAVE as if it was.

That's not what you said in the original story. You said that you were
buying furniture for your 'Christian sister (actually Atheist/Buddhist) who
had spent 20 years ministering in Korea (actually, working as well as a Male
to Female transexual)'. So you weren't just lying about being a Christian,
were you? You lied and said that your relative was a woman, a Christian and
a missionary in Korea for twenty years. When in reality, s/he was a
transexual 'atheist/Buddhist' (a wee bit redundant, that...) who wasn't a
missionary, but was 'working'.
I don't know about you, but that's a bit more than simply claiming that you
are Christian.

So stop it. Just stop it. There isn't any excuse for what Rain lover did.
and the only reason was his greed and his bigotry. HIS bigotry, not that
of
the store owner.

How is me claiming to be a Christian bigotry? If it WAS in anyway, my
"bigotry" was backed up when the owner lowered the price.

Your bigotry is evidenced by the fact that you feel justified in lying to
the man and stealing from him just because he is a Christian. That is, his
Christianity makes him unworthy of hearing the truth from you. That is
bigotry.

Heck, that is all any Christian can do, *claim* to be a Christian, and
everyone of them lies about it as shown by all Christian bibles, not one
claimed Christian can do any of the things that are said to be abilities that
Christians should have: raising the dead, moving mountains, healing the sick
(by prayer/laying on of hands). So obviously all *claimed* Christians are

Probably because the only thing I think is necessary to be a Christian is to
believe that one is, and claim it. (shrug) Unlike you, I don't think that a
Christian must adhere to a specific group of ideas, or ideals, to claim it.
Especially when the ideas and ideals they are supposed to adhere to are
being dictated by someone who doesn't believe, and doesn't like,
Christianity in general.
But that's just me.

Hey, if he makes the claim, then he's a christian! for however long
and to whomever he makes the claim.
isn't it neat how he can turn it on and off? I think a lot of other
Christians can do that too.

Hmmn. Well, as liberal as I am in regard to this definition, even I think
that to be a Christian one has to actually believe that one is, not just
claim it...whatever one believes that being "Christian" is.
Picky of me, I know, but hey, I feel the need to draw the line somewhere.

Hmmmm...............nice that you got a discount, but it WAS through
deception. Was this a tit-for-tat kinda thing?

Good grief, Robin. What's wrong with 'us' getting a break from the
superstitious? If they knew we were atheist we'd pay full price. Those
bastards don't even pay taxes which we have to shell out for to
support them.

Let me get this straight, so you went into a Christian-owned store and
you bilked them for 30% off the retail price by *pretending* to be
god-a-fearin'? I have only one thing to say to that...brilliant. You
are doing the "Lord's" work, keep it up brother Steve.
