I got "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel and... |
and five packets of coffee in a gift set, all flavored like different
hard liquors (Jack Daniels, Southern Comfort, etc).
I'm calling it the "Heaven and Hell" package.
Any comments on the book? Heard of it?

I drink coffee to sober up. Your coffee set is just plain damned
confusing.

You need the companion book by Earl Doherty...

(Although I think Doherty could have left out the silly pompous
courtroom emphasis)

Yeah I have only read a few chapters. He had a concept that gets old
fairly quickly and he seems to be writing with too much negative
emotion. Strobel on the other hand is too giddy. Neither one of them
is convincing but Doherty ends up sounding bitter while Strobel seems
merely stupid.

Gotta love the negative reviews:

Well, all I can say is Satan is at work here, through you, Mr. Doherty.
He always loves to knock the truth down - and you're book is just
another example of that. But, he always likes to do it in a way that is
very "convincing" for those who are searching for truth. Do not read
this book."
I'm amazed that there are even five people who agreed with the review.

They might not have agreed - they might have been 'helped' to
avoid reading the book.

My wife owns it. I picked it up one day and found three (what I would
consider) lies on one page. I checked the back to see if the citations
were referenced, they were not.. I believe there are better referenced
books that deal with the historical evidence of Jesus. I recommend "The
Jesus Puzzle" by Earl Doherty. You should also read "The Case For
Christ" or a similar book to contrast. I usually like to read a
contrasting viewpoint to my own, but I think that I have learned enough
biblical history in my 12 years of catholic school to realize that there
is no substantial information in Strobel's book.
If you do read it I would be interested to know if he talks about his
former atheism. Specifically if he defines atheism as a lack of belief
in god(s) or if he was a back sliding Christian that just defined
himself as an atheist.
BTW I enjoy having the theistic view point of yourself and still sunny
on this news group. I just wish there were more rational theist
participating in this group. (not that I think theist are rational ;-) )

When two men of science disagree, they do not invoke the secular arm;
they wait for further evidence to decide the issue, because, as men
of science, they know that neither is infallible. But when two
theologians differ, since there is no criteria to which either can
appeal, there is nothing for it but mutual hatred and an open or
covert appeal to force.

I've read a little of Strobel's other book "The Case for Faith." A total
idiot, and an insult to my intelligence. I would expect nothing much
better from this book. I'd stick with the coffee...

Yeah, I've thumbed through it and seen reviews of it. It's a very, very
weak case at best. It's really just lots of personal testimonials and it
quickly drops all pretense of being objective.

My friend who went from an agnostic to a fundamentalist-ish Christian,
likes the book. We still get along decent though, since he's been
pestered enough by missionaries in his previous life to try annoy
people with his newfound faith. He became relgious through a personal
experience not through series of bibles being thumped at him.
